“We wanted to close with both cars”

The Aston Martin team would love to close with both cars today at the Belgian GP, and they almost did. Sebastian Vettel finished P8 and Lance Stroll P11.

Team Principal Mike Krack: “After qualifying yesterday, we said our goal would be to score points with both cars in today’s race, and we almost achieved that. Sebastian finished 8th and Lance finished 11th, less than a second behind 10th (Alex Albon of Williams). We ran both cars on medium tires, then split strategies. Seb: Medium-hard-medium and Lance: Medium-medium-hard. Both drivers made the most of the opportunities that these two strategies gave them, Lance in particular doing some impressive passing maneuvers and, as I said, we were one step away from scoring with both cars. From here we go directly to Zandvoort (Netherlands), where we hope to further increase our points total in the championship”, he concluded.

Vettel: “Eight is a good result. I was a little unlucky with the timing of the second stop. I got behind Pierre (Gasly) and lost a lap behind him, which allowed Esteban (Ocon) on new tires to reduce the advantage I had built up in the middle. Once again we were more competitive in the race than qualifying, we started strong and managed to get a good pace. I was able to put pressure on all the Alpine cars and I think seventh could be possible, but they were too slow for us today. But we will collect these points,” he added.

Stroll: “It was a difficult day today, but we were very close to getting points.” Things did not go as well as we expected. Losing a few chances early on made it difficult, but we had some fun clashes in midfield. Later in the race we got stuck in the DRS train behind Alex’s (Albon) Williams and eventually missed out. However, our race pace has been good and we are getting good performance from the car when it matters most.
