In the early 2000s, Ford created a new nomenclature to identify off-road packages for the brand’s image, FX4, a combination of the automaker’s name and the word 4×4 and which, over time, came to be used as American versions . examples.

Around here, the first model to use the version called FX4 was the Maverick, which, as we showed in our “Test of Time”, does not live up to its name. But shortly after the launch of the mediator, less than a month later, Ford presented a new configuration of the Ranger, especially the one with a more attractive style.

On the Ranger, the FX4 version makes more sense.

The off-road attitude is not new to the Ranger, two years ago, Ford presented the Storm, as an almost entry-level configuration, but with a very attractive style. Even with the rapid success of that version, Ford realized the need for a version with a road marking, but more complete and, thus, the FX4 (R$ 298,790) was born, our “Test of Time”.

Probably the last unique configuration of the Ranger before the generation update – in recent years the brand has introduced Black as well – the FX4, unlike its younger sister, lives up to its name, with a strong off-road mark and, even base. in the middle configuration, better equipped than the top-of-the-line Maverick.

The FX4 has several off-road style features, such as running boards.

It’s no wonder that automakers are betting on more off-road offerings for pickup trucks, Ford itself already had the Storm before introducing the FX4. And, one of the differences of this type of configuration is the appearance, with a more adventurous footprint, in addition, of course, to the things that focus on 4 × 4.

In this way, in terms of design, the FX4 has unique details of the version, such as the front grille, and has featured parts in matte and glossy black throughout the body, in the running boards, the protection of the wheel houses, mirrors, wheels, the saint antônio, bumper protection and the grill itself. The front lights are filled with LEDs and have a black mask.

Visually, the interior is the same as in other versions.

On the rear and sides, the FX4’s red lettering stands out, as does the Ranger name in bold black lettering on the bucket lid. The taillights follow the headlights and also have a blacked-out grille and the rear panel is in gloss black.

Other unique features are the tubular saint antônio with hanging parts for the bells, the fender flares, the gray strip in the lower area of ​​the doors, the platform-type footboards (which make access to the cabin easier) and the wheels of 18 inches with Scorpion tires. In 265/60, there was no roof rack.

Inside, the truck features red-stitched leather seats with FX4 logo emblazoned on the backrests. The same material is seen on the gearshift lever and the center armrest. The cabin still features gloss black on the dashboard in front of the passenger, on the steering wheel and on the interior door handle frames.

As usual with pickups, the hardware is a bit rusty, but everything is well finished and without any burrs or misaligned parts. The back seat accommodates three adults comfortably, of course four is better. The bucket has a volume of 1,023 kg, just missing the usual guard. Without it, any load can scratch the painting.

Even in between, the list of accessories is even more impressive.

The FX4 is based on the XLT version, slightly below the Limited – Ford could have done like Nissan, and used the top of the line to “put” an adventurous option, like the Frontier Platinum and Pro-4X. As a result, the equipment is, as expected, intermediate. But still, it has things that the Maverick FX4 doesn’t have.

In terms of safety, it comes with seven airbags, traction, stability, anti-rollover and load adjustment controls, start and stop devices, reversing camera, parking and rain sensors, cruise control, lights daytime running lights and full LED lights.

It also has dual-zone digital climate control, an electrically adjustable driver’s seat, two LCD screens on the instrument panel, a SYNC 3 media center with an eight-inch display and Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity, locking assistant covers. bucket and the FordPass Connect connectivity system. .

A powerful engine is one of the most important things to take.

The FX4 has the best set of mechanics that Ford offers in Brazil, when it comes to service. It uses a powerful 3.2-liter five-cylinder engine that produces 200 horsepower and 47.8 kgfm of torque, along with 4×4 traction, power steering, six-speed automatic transmission and upgraded suspension.

With a popular kit, the FX4 performs well on pavement. A powerful engine makes the truck accelerate well, of course there is a delay typical of turbo diesel engines, but as soon as the turbine “fills up”, it ignites. But even this normal delay is not heard, which makes the acceleration, the speed starts and increases better and safer.

The electric steering and automatic transmission work well too.

Electric steering is another highlight, if the Ranger is easy to drive, even at its 5,354mm height. And, because it is continuous, at high speed, the steering wheel is “in the hands of the driver”, without any feeling of losing control.

Suspension is a different case. Since the facelift of the Ranger range, carried out in 2019, the system has worked admirably. Even when the bucket is empty, it doesn’t explode much, especially for the rear seat occupants. But as the FX4 uses AT tires, on the pavement it is not as smooth as the Limited, for example. Now, on earth, he is better.

The FX4 handles any terrain with ease.

The 4 × 4 system of the Ranger, together with the powerful engine, are already old friends. Dedicated, the set works admirably and, in the FX4, will be able to go further, thanks to the mixed-use tires. With them, even off-road, the feeling is of driving on a well-planned, smooth and flawless road.

This road comfort is guaranteed by tires and suspension system. On normal roads, just without asphalt, there is no need to even use 4 × 4 to make the trip more comfortable. Now, facing a tougher road, he continues to “work” as if he were on a paved road.

Mixed-use tires help well off-road.

When facing heavy roads, simply activate the 4×4 mode and the truck faces hills – or downhill – and loose gravel, ditches, unevenness without effort. During our test, it was not necessary to activate the reduction at any time, especially because of the tires, which work well even in the most difficult obstacles, the FX4 easily beat them all.

On descents, the assistance helps the driver to focus only on steering, without worrying about the brake pedal. Regarding the use, the FX4 was not the best, but we ran a lot on off-road sections and, for a short time, with the activated 4 × 4, which explains – ​​in part – the high cost, but it should be less. excellent.. At the end of the test, he got 8.3km/l.
