Your customers on SUVs. VW responds to this with another model: crossover coupé Taigo.

In the larger portfolio of SUVs from VW, Taigo replaces a good entry-level model. However, the price is only cheap on paper. In reality, small crossings get more marks for Polo technology certified by the brisk coupé back.

If you believe in the VW configuration, Taigo with a starting price of 19,865 euros is the easiest option in the range of branded SUVs, which now includes nine models. However, this only applies to the entry level version. The more you choose the line of equipment, the more Taigo outperforms the T-Cross technically related, slightly shorter. Finally, even the T-Roc, which is one of the highest class, can be reached.

There is also ample space in the back

This is not surprising, since Taigo, like the coupé cross, belongs to a body class that is traditionally the highest in terms of price and image. In addition, with a height of 4.27 meters it is taller than T-Cross (4.11 meters) and T-Roc (4.23 meters), but remains below Tiguan (4.49 meters).

The size benefit does not translate completely into space, but Taigo is quite spacious for the crossover coupé. In the first line, of course, but especially in the back, where tall people can also stand. On the one hand, there is ample space on the summit, on the other hand, the windows do not enter the narrow rocks like most competitors, but it remains largely comfortable despite the sloping roof line. The trunk also faces just a little bit of the rotating frame: If you load more than the edge of the window, you will get a lot more space than on a small standard car.

The upper sill is disturbing

One can be bothered by the high loading herring – but that is due to the concept of crossovers. Apart from that, the product section is well designed and offers a few practical additions and hooks for bags and nets for small items.

Basically, a well-designed interior, which comes in its basic features from the recently elevated Polo, is also intriguing. As there, VW sometimes exaggerates with modern upgrades. Buttons on the air conditioning system are designed as touchable control panels, which work much better than conventional buttons, especially when used blindly. The same situation applies to the operation of an optional infotainment system. Smaller versions, on the other hand, have more function keys and rotary controls. Customers should also make concessions when it comes to quality of materials in the interior. Many hard plastic surfaces do not inspire visually or happily from the point of view of the high price.

Slightly slip when starting

On the road, the VW is horizontal, with a slightly reinforced chassis. Long crossings take curves without any body direction, but exposure to the body is irritating when breaking and starting, at least in relation to a gasoline engine more than 1.5 liters (150 hp). Then Taigo bends backwards so far even to a moderate point on the gas at the beginning where the front wheels rub against the pavement. Even on dry land, you are often walking just a few millimeters from the rider’s unintentional start.

This effect is probably less noticeable with weak 1.0-liter petrol engines (95 hp and 110 hp). In general, a four-cylinder engine on a small crossover is confident and alive – but if you are on a city highway, you should also be adequately serviced by three cylinders. They should also use a few tenths of a liter of a little oil. Where a 1.5 liter engine with an average of 6.5 liters is nothing but drunk. If you drive carefully, you will also get 5 before the decimal point.

If you save on the engine, you can spend money wisely elsewhere. Because as shown, Taigo is not a model for savings. The entry level variant is only available in conjunction with a smaller engine and is stored mainly in terms of structure, rolls on small metal wheels and largely provides body functions and decoration of the pilot room. If you want to unlock the potential of the coupé eye at least a little, you should grab at least a “Life” model for 23,050 euros. However, the crossover is only good for “Fashion” equipment, which costs 27,385 euros, or “R-Line” equipment, which costs 28,260 euros. In all cases, the more powerful two-cylinder engines form the core. Those who want the 1.5 liter engines installed in the test car pay at least 31,210 euros (“Fashion”).

Finally, the gap in the VW model array that Taigo fits is not huge. But if you like a coupé-like look and don’t mind the larger dimensions, you will find that it is an interesting alternative not only to the T-Cross sister model. If the back of the coupé is not needed, it is advisable to look at a T-Roc or even a regular Golf or Polo. (SP-X)
