Volvo Polestar 2 will be the first electric car to have Android Automotive OS

The Polestar 2, Volvo’s all-electric sedan, will be the first car to use Google’s Android Automotive operating system. The brand is expanding its technology to third-party developers, bringing software to in-car infotainment systems. Aindo announced on Wednesday (5/1) that media platform developers will be able to create experiences for Android Automotive OS and Polestar 2, starting at Google I/O 2019, Google’s annual developer conference, which will be held between 7 and 9 May.

Polestar is Volvo’s hybrid and electric car brand. In 2017, it launched the Polestar 1 and, in February of this year, it announced the Polestar 2, a compact with 408 hp, 500 km of autonomy and equipped with a multimedia system and an 11-inch screen and brings Android Automotive OS. on the board. The model, which receives integrated Google services, includes Google Assistant, Google Maps and Google Play, and everything seems to indicate the possibility of downloading applications and expanding their functionality.

The Android Automotive OS is flexible and adapts to different screen sizes, formats and resolutions, so the possibilities are huge. Also, as shown in tests on Android Police, the operating system is ready to work without an Internet connection and without a Google account (although this means making sacrifices).

Polestar isn’t the only company with plans to integrate an Android version into its in-car infotainment systems. Volvo announced that it will use the same in the next generation Ivo. Fiat Chrysler Automobiles announced Tuesday that it will use technology from Harman and Google to develop its connected car services. The Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance has also announced plans for Android Automotive OS, along with other automakers that Google cannot disclose at this time.
