THE Volkswagen and French-Italian chipmaker STMicroelectronics said Wednesday they will develop new microprocessors amid a global dispute that has crippled the auto industry.

Volkswagen’s software division Carad said in May that it will also offer Qualcomm systems on a chip for autonomous driving up to levels 4, where the car can handle all driving issues in most situations without human intervention. The new contract does not affect that partnership, a Carad spokesman said.

Neither side disclosed the financial implications of the deal, which makes STMicroelectronics one of Volkswagen’s top technology partners.

Both companies are “going to agree” that TSMC will develop it, the statement said.

“We guarantee the production of the chips needed for our cars and ensure the supply of the necessary microchips for years to come,” said Murat Aksel, Volkswagen’s head of procurement.

A global semiconductor shortage has left automakers around the world unable to fill orders, with unfinished cars shutting down yards for months.
