Honda Civic is celebrating its jubilee this year. Yes, it is already 50 years that the Japanese icon is part of the world’s automotive environment, and the success that we know of. In fact, since the first generation in 1972, over 27.5 million copies have received copies in over 170 countries! There are only 3 models in the world that have sold best: Toyota Corolla, its biggest rival (50 million), Ford F150 (42 million) and Volkswagen Golf (38 million).

The Civic, however, and more than any other, has changed dramatically, generation after generation. From the city car of only 3.54 m, it took the length and volume for a while, to be compact first, then compact.

At 4.55 meters high, the latest Civic is becoming the largest sedan on the market. Approaching even short family cars (4.64 m for Alfa Romeo Giulia).

The bow is more prudent: the bonnet is flat and the shield leaves the large (false) air of the previous generation. LED lights are thinner.

Today, the 11th generation is playing dangerously with the family part, as with growing 31 mm more compared to its predecessor, it reaches 4.55 m. Even the larger Mazda 3 (4.46 m) and the late Lancia Delta (4.52 m) are left behind.

And this novelty is through its revolution. Without starting at all from blank paper, since this generation takes over the previous platform, designers have gone through the outside and the interior from top to bottom, while under the hood is disappearing clean and simple, at least in France. . , 100% internal combustion engines.

Yes, the 2022 Civic is “e: HEV”, understands simple hybrids, such as the new Jazz or HR-V. And so it is. Because we are not sure that we are entitled to Type R, which will nevertheless be available in other markets.

The rear part is reduced, the rear bumper is also softer than before. The lights are connected by a band, but not light.

Home hybrid system with some operation

And she picks up recipes from her classmates. Namely an electric motor that is responsible for running the front wheels in most cases, a second electric motor that serves as a generator to charge a small hybrid battery, which here has a capacity of 1.05 kWh, and a heat engine that is used as a generator to supply the electric motor and energy, or which drives the front wheels in the most difficult driving conditions. For example, in the city at low speeds, an electric motor pulls on a battery (charged with fuel) to move the car. In the event of a power demand, a hybrid condition is triggered, the heat engine then becomes a generator to supply energy to the electric motor, but does not drive the wheels directly. It is only in road mode, at high speeds, that the internal combustion engine joins the front axle to drive the wheels, then operates at its best speed, and can always benefit from electric vehicle support if necessary. lift, excess, etc.).

The hybrid barrier consists of two electric motors and a heat engine. The set develops 184 hp power and 315 Nm torque. Not bad.

But for Citizens, authority is higher than for Jazz or HR-V. Indeed, here the main electric motor grows 135 kW, or 184 hp, with 315 Nm of torque, which is a good value, while the Atkinson 4-cylinder and direct injection grows 105 kW and 186 Nm.

Data on air consumption and emissions are particularly low, with 4.7 l / 100 km and 108 g of CO2 / km for entry level Executive, and 5 l / 100 km for 113 and 114 g / km for Sport and Advance high finishes. It is better than the chosen rival Toyota Corolla 184h, which delivers 5.2 l / 100 km and 120 g of CO2 / km. Heat opponents are far behind, and plug-ins play into another register.

So much for the revolution taking place under the hood. And even though this Civic generation is not the first to be hybrid (we remember the 2006 Civic IMA), it is the first generation to use this new system.

The most sensible design

But it is not just under the hood that the Civic is changing. For beauty too, it changes its tone. Unlike the previous generation, which showed a strong and sporty style, this greatly reduces its lines.

Of course, we always recognize the Civic. But the body is soft, the shields are not too sharp, the eyes and the rear lights are thin. It’s all not natural, more meaningless, some might say. It is not a lie. Yes, the Civic 11 is the most sophisticated. But it is also not fun. The body shape extends from the front to the back of the car, and emphasizes the lower body line, which improves the overall appearance. The hood is low, flat, and the back is also reduced. The collapsed roof line draws more than ever the coupe line. And a quarter of the window ends in stages, which still exerts a whole force.

The general style is more sensible, of course, than the previous generation. Honda always does this for extraordinary generations! But if a favorite doesn’t fit, at least no one will be shocked by the drawing, which can serve past generations.

By far, this Civic really looks like a small Honda Accord. An example that is no longer sold here, but still in Japan and North America. And like him, he probably will not fall in love, but at least he will not hate anyone, which may be the case for generations past, since the 8th grade.

The interior is modest, unfussy, but ergonomic and well-finished

Inside, too, the Civic 11 is prudent. Already the name 10 had put its foot on the brakes about the authenticity of the passenger compartment. But there, we find ourselves with the German style codes. It is modest, it is black, it is tight-knit. Not very emotional, but effective. The conventional design hides some natural elements, such as air vents that are hidden behind a fabric that resembles a honey comb.

The dashboard is now being treated "German style". It is modest, square, without frills. No sense, but ergonomics and proper quality of equipment, and assemblies without blame. Too bad, we will not be able to choose anything other than black as the color of the interior.

The touch screen 9-inch touch screen is well-positioned, showing excellent ergonomics, as well as, for example, real-world weather controls, which are much easier to use than forced through the screen. In addition, the multimedia system has been redesigned. It is simpler and faster, more pleasing than it is now, even if its images have not yet reached the peak of modernity.

The quality of the material, it is very appropriate for everything that is visible and in contact with hands or hands. Conventions are flawless. But they are cheaper in the lower part, as often, and even in premium products, but also in the back seats, where everything is hard plastic.

The back room is amazing, especially in terms of the bedroom. The middle passenger will be worse, as often, but the service tunnel is not very high.

The trunk capacity of 410 liters (415 with storage under the floor) is located in the upper middle. The flexible luggage cover that can be pulled back to the side does not have to be more practical.

In terms of housing, the recent Civic is taking advantage of the wheel extension of 35 mm, up to 2.73 m now, to provide a comfortable seat for bench seats. Knees, shoulders, head, we are comfortable in all directions. As for the volume of the trunk, it does not change compared to the previous generation: 410 liters under the shelf, 415 liters if we consider the (small) storage under the trunk floor, and 1,220 liters with the bench down. It is located in the middle of the upper.

However, it is unfortunate that when the seat cushions are knocked down, the floor is not completely flat.

After circling the owner, the time has come to turn it on, and leave without sound in electronic mode towards the next page, where you will find our driving display.
