Video presentation Volkswagen Amarok (2023)

Well, his name is Amaroki, as a first name. Indeed, it is an abbreviation of Volkswagen like the previous one. But this German look is only German and above all, American creation and South African manufacture. But why was this 4×4 dumper born with this kind of union? With love for the pioneering spirit of America and Afrikaner Bush? Not true. The details are more legal and economic.

Remember: those were good times. Sometime before that the takers took advantage, in France at least, of the legal ambiguity, and sold like hotcakes. Imagine, they were not subject to the malus, where with their big engines, necessary to move 2.5 tons of gear, they would have been fined more than 10,000 euros. Alas, the parliamentarian ended up discovering his mistake and since 2019 they no longer escaped the famous blow of ecological bamboo.

As a result, the market, which exceeded 20,000 units annually, collapsed. Renault, which released its Alaskan with Nissan and its Navara, Mercedes with the X-Class and therefore Volkswagen, threw in the towel and suddenly, the German who intended to put the lid back on the Amarok 2 found himself facing a problem. Because VW is global and if France neglects to take it, other countries and continents like it. Where to turn? Because it was never a question of producing alone a machine that, indeed, does not sell very badly, but nevertheless in a low way. So you can go see king of its kind, the undisputed leader in the dump of 4x4s: the American Ford and its best-selling Ranger.

German Ford Ranger, with real differences

An idea that is relevant (and not selective) because at the same time, Ford is working on the fourth generation of its Ranger. The deal was concluded: the new Amarok will be released in the same South African channel as the American one. But for VW, there’s no question of sticking your badge on an existing model. In Wolfsburg one has its pride and the Amarok has, in appearance, many differences from the American pick-up.

In fact, the goal of the game was to “Vwtize” the American line. Therefore, from the front face, typical Volkswagen, to the profile also distinguished by Ranger, nothing should remember its origin. Obviously, the numbers are the same, and so are the sizes of the two machines. It is not yet known, but we already know that the wheelbase has increased by 5 cm. The front wheels have been moved forward, to improve the franchisor’s angle of attack.

But Volkswagen wanted to show its difference.

Internally, things for Volkswagen designers were difficult when it was necessary to make a German machine. Difficult, and expensive, to completely change the passenger compartment. Result: The various features of the dashboard are completely identical. The meters in front of the driver are digital on both sides as well. On the other hand, the tablet, vertical on two pick-ups, is somewhat changed, through different covers and buttons. If the good idea of two glove boxes on the passenger side is maintained, the materials used seem to be more advanced in the Amarok than in the Ranger. Mechanically, Volkswagen has also managed to leave its mark.

If the automatic gearbox, like the 4-wheel drive (and with the short and long box) is the same, on the sides of the engine, the VW label has successfully placed itself. The 250 hp V6 TDI, already under the hood of the first Amarok, has been updated. And the second, still diesel, is the Ford 209 hp 4-cylinder that will be there. Diesel gram for that, but zero gasoline versions and even less hybrid. So of course it’s the 4 cylinder 2.0 l bi-turbo that will make up the bulk of sales in France. French sales that certainly shouldn’t exceed a few hundred copies every year, from May 2023, the expected date of the Amarok’s arrival in France. By that time we should know the prices of the machine (which will also be decisive when it comes to its success) and the two planned finishing levels.
