Vettel sees Aston Martin as best in racing and says 8th at Belgian GP “is solid result” – Formula 1 News – Grand Prix – Formula 1 News

Sebastian Vettel knows that eighth place in the Belgian GP, which took place this Sunday (28) at Spa-Francorchamps, was a positive result, especially considering Aston Martin’s poor pace in the standings. The four-time champion, who did not qualify for Q2, ended up benefiting from numerous penalties for the drivers in front of him and started tenth.

After the race, the German classified the final result as “solid” and explained that he lost time behind Pierre Gasly after the second stop, allowing Esteban Ocon to close and, therefore, overtake the French Alpine.

“Eighth is a solid result. I was a little unlucky at the second stop, I was behind Pierre [Gasly] for one round, and that allowed Esteban [Ocon], with new tires, reduce the advantage I built up in the second phase,” said Vettel. “Again, we were more competitive in the race than qualifying. I started strong, and we managed to get a good pace. I was able to put pressure on the Alpines, and I think seventh would have been possible, but they were faster”, admitted the veteran.

“We know that’s the way it is. We are not very strong. Yesterday we were ninth and tenth, with Williams faster in qualifying, and today we were faster than them because we had better tires and also more races, but we know it’s difficult. Our goal remains the same: to get points in every race”, added Vettel, who now has 20 points and is 12th in the World Championship.

Aged 34, Seb announced at the end of July that this would be his last season formula 1 and he was asked about the feeling he had when he last raced in the category at the classic Spa-Francorchamps circuit, but admitted he doesn’t think too much when he’s on track.

“I don’t know, I don’t think so. I know this, because people remind me all the time. I enjoyed it, but I didn’t pass Eau Rouge on the last lap thinking it was my last time there. Better things are coming.”
