In 2020, the PSA group, now Stellantis, announces that it will not produce a generation for Citroën C1 and Peugeot 108. Automobile), a vehicle born of a partnership between the French company and Toyota. He then quickly announces that he is taking stock of his ex-girlfriend and that he is promoting the development of his third generation Aygo.
The results of this work were revealed a few months later, under the name Aygo X. If a stranger takes the main design lines of his predecessor, he still claims to have changed into a crossover. Is this concept the way of life of the category left by almost all the major groups? At Suzuki, we have been convinced of this for a long time. Indeed, since 2016, Ignis’ third generation has already taken over the shadow of the young broadcaster. He never missed pushing his sister Celerio, the most modern city mini-mini car, toward the exit.
So far, these two Japanese are the only representatives of their kind. If, on paper, their concept looks very similar, the forms given to them by the designers are very different. Toyota relies mainly on its green plastic wheel arches and its large wheels (locked 17 “and 18” depending on the version) to create the illusion. Ignis, in turn, has the shape of an SUV. So, the roof bars, the famous guards and the big shields are in the program. It is also the only one of the two to have alternatives to drive all wheels.
Beyond the street, a natural playground for these Japanese women is a city. An area where automatic transmission is often required. They have all chosen to adopt the CVT type, which is to say change all the time. A technical option that is a little expensive, not complicated and free of any vibrations. Whether with this transmission or with a manual gearbox, there is no weapon option. Toyota is therefore powered by a single-cylinder 3-cylinder 1.0 VVT-i of 72 hp. Already known from the original Aygo, this barrier does not contain any kind of hybrid and over-charged. Ignis also has only one engine: 83 hp 1.2 Dualjet Hybrid. This is 4 cylinders with a small hybrid, but also deprived of supercharging.
Practical features: Ignis does not forget the rear passengers
The interior presentation of our two day rivals differs similarly from their outer lines. Toyota prefers curvaceous furniture that, according to the version, is not afraid to play colored cards. Digital placement is also included in the program, as standard or option depending on the frequency range, the digital instrument cluster to some extent, the 9-inch touch screen and the automatic air conditioner. Ignis’ interiors are equally impressive with a straightforward layout. line than body structure structure. The entire dashboard is free of folds, except for air vents at its ends. Here, the instrument device is completely analogous and the screen of the media system, with a 7 ′ ′ horizontal only, appears the size of a. his sixth candle.
Although very small, Aygo X and Ignis can provide ideal space for occupants of the front seats of all sizes and buildings. In both cases, the steering wheel and driver’s seat can be adjusted for height. If the match ends in a draw in the front positions, Ignis largely wins as soon as you move back. Indeed, it saves more space for the feet and head of the bench occupants. As long as it does not exceed 1.80 m. Another Suzuki trick, the bench seat higher than the front seats. Therefore, even children will be able to see the road from their extra seat, which will prevent them from leaving “I’ll be back in my 4 hours”. Behind the Aygo X, it is best to have short legs or sit behind a person less than 1m60 tall. Indeed, if the driver is 1.80 m tall, there is less than ten inches left to fit his feet. In addition, the upper waist and the C-column mounting provide a sense of compression to the bench seat. And do not rely on opening the window to breathe fresh air: they have a compass shape here and therefore only allow a narrow stream of oxygen.
In terms of storage, the Aygo X prefers to place bets on those on the front storm doors, which readily accept a one-and-a-half-liter bottle. At the bottom of the dashboard, there are only two cup holders and, from finishing the Collection, help reload your smart phone. Ignis does the opposite, with door barrels of smaller size but more storage than the central position. However, it will be difficult to find a place to put your water bottle.
As for the quality of interior design, it is in line with what is expected of a car in this segment, which is larger, but has a touch of color on the finest finishes, and is composed of hard plastic. Note, however, that in the Aygo X, the possibility of choosing a good leather invoice / fabric invoice, Ignis does not offer better than average invoice fabric.
Let’s finish our tour of the owner and trunks of our two competitors. If no one will have, a priori, the idea of moving with one of them, the weekly race will hold without much difficulty in Ignis, which can count on 261 liters of luggage under the back shelf. For the Aygo X, it will be more difficult, the trunk will deliver only 231 liters or even, if the JBL audio system option is considered, only 189 liters. In the “antique” configuration, that is to say, with the seat down, Suzuki buries its rival even more. It therefore accepts up to 1,097 liters of product, versus only 820 liters of Toyota.
Budget: economically over time
Aygo X as Ignis preserves CVT transmission for their medium and high frequency completion. So the price may seem too high when it comes to city-mini cars. Of course, investing approximately € 18,000 (€ 17,990 for Aygo X Dynamic and € 18,250 for Ignis Privilege) in one as in the other will diminish the enthusiasm of others. But these rates are now in the middle. And invoices can fly further. Because if Ignis offers only two versions (So, the opportunity, along with the € 19,400 package), Aygo X will expand the variant: Dynamic (€ 17,990), Structure (€ 18,990), Collection (20 € 690) and Air Limited, photo here (€ 22,990).
In order to be forgiven for their moderate extortion in buying, our two characters turn out to be very sober. During our experiment, we were able to obtain, in one case as in another and with conditions to reduce travel on speedways, an average of 6.5 l / 100 km. With as much anticipation as possible during urban trips, we were even able to save 1 liter per 100 km by Toyota and up to 1.5 l / 100 km by Suzuki. The CVT box, which uses less energy than traditional direct ones, is not free in these very good marks.
Finally, let us add that our two rivals have a good 3 year warranty or 100,000 miles, excellent reliability and high selling value, and yet in this last area a little profit for Suzuki.
Equipment: Aygo X, costly upgrade
By choosing not to offer automatic versions on entry level completion, Aygo X as Ignis offers, from the beginning, a perfect gift. Own air conditioner, rear camera, touch screen system and compatibility with Android Auto and Apple Carplay are common. To justify the absence of a speed controller, air travel control and its additional cost of € 260 compared to Aygo X Dynamic, Ignis Privilege also has LED lights, 16 alloy wheels, front seat heaters and colored rear windows black.
In completing its state-of-the-art packing, Suzuki widens the gap. Available for € 19,400, it gets automatic air conditioner, automatic emergency brakes, route change notification, cruise / speed control and integrated navigation. Many devices are available at Toyota in its definition of the Collection. But in the end you need an extra € 1,290, or € 20,690 in total. Differences that are not enough to justify the presence of a smartphone induction charger, Smart Parking function and more fun presentation.
In addition to its versions, Aygo X also offers, until the end of the year, a special Air Limited series. This is the version photographed here and which can be identified by its orange exterior and interior entrances, its canvas solar roof, its JBL sound system, its front and rear parking sensors, and its mounting leather / fabric. . To justify its impressive price of € 22,990, nothing less was needed.
