The technical sheet of the Ford e-Transit Custom electric vehicle has been launched

Even if its production in Turkey should not start before the autumn of 2023, the new E-Transit System does not intend to keep too many secrets. After revealing the first official images, Ford is now saying more about its power consumption and technical characteristics.

The new Ford e-Transit Custom will be able to use its high-voltage battery to power various electronic devices.

A true institution in the utility world, Transit is undergoing a revolution. At least in its Custom version, whose central design is well known by European experts. The next generation of this Renault Trafic rival, Citroën Jumpy and Peugeot Expert will definitely switch to 100% electric. It is even the only version that has been revealed for now. To learn more about diesel and plug-in hybrid engines, still in the program, you will have to be patient. On the other hand, the e-Transit Custom is already talking, despite entering production only planned for the season of 2023, at the Turkish factory of Otosan. After revealing its first official images last May, it says more about its technical specifications today.

High capacity battery

Charging at the fast terminal can go up to 125 kW, an impressive power for the unit.

If we already knew, since the spring, that this car had a target range of 380 km on the WLTP cycle, so we learn as a bonus that it relies on a battery with a capacity of 74 kWh to reach this figure. Guaranteed for 8 years/160,000, this assembly uses “pouch” type cells, which will be shared with the F-150 Electric pickup. A technology that promises an increase in energy density of 12% compared to that of the e-Transit big brother. This E-Transit model will also have a heat pump as standard to reduce its electricity consumption in cold weather and a “one pedal” mode that allows you to stop without pressing the brake pedal. Not to mention the capacity of power equipment less than 2.3kW through high voltage battery, which can be useful, especially on certain construction sites. Recharging will remain at 400 V with a power of up to 125 kW at fast direct current stations. So it will be possible to go from 15 to 80% charge in 41 minutes. On the other hand, in the 11 kW Wall Box in three-phase alternating current, Ford announces that it takes 8 hours to fill the energy.

Two possible forces for an electric motor

It is built on a new platform, which should be taken by Volkswagen as part of the cooperation between the two groups, This car puts its electric motor in the back. So it is propulsion. To increase the available space, this block is attached to the floor and tilted at 90 degrees. Two power levels are on the menu: 135 hp and 217 hp, with a torque of 415 Nm in both cases. With independent rear wheels and a lower load sill than the current Transit Custom, this new generation has 1,100 kg of payload in its 100% electric version. Its loading capacity varies between 5.8 and 9 m3while its loading height can go up to 3.45 m.

The unique L-shaped interior configuration will even make it possible to place two rear seats when transporting long objects, separated from the passenger compartment by a partition. It will also be possible to tow up to 2,000 kg and choose extended cab or Combi versions. Finally, a new transmission assist feature will reduce downtime by activating the hazard warning lights and automatically opening/closing the doors and windows as soon as the driver shifts the gear switch to P mode.

A steering wheel that can be converted into a table!

Like its competitors, this medium-sized organization promises to be a horse and a mobile office. So it has a 5G modem as standard, while its two-flat steering wheel can tilt horizontally as an option to work as a small table. Large 13-inch touch screen, digital instruments, many driving aids, etc The technological endowment does not envy many passenger cars. Especially since it will be possible to do some updates remotely (on the air or OTA in English). Ship managers will be able to rely on convenient mobile communication tools and a digital key system that works like hotel room access cards. But it is also by developing very low operating costs that Ford hopes to convince companies with this e-Transit Custom. It remains to be seen if this will be enough to make people forget the price which is probably higher than that of the diesel versions.
