The Subaru Solterra will be the brand’s first electric vehicle

Subaru’s first electric car will be an SUV built on a new platform developed by Toyota and will be called the Solterra. The Japanese brand intends to start selling the model in mid-2022, initially in Japan, Canada, the United States (US), China and Europe.

The C-segment (middle) SUV is very reminiscent of the BZ4X, Toyota’s first car presented at this year’s Shanghai Motor Show. The two cars are even being produced together as part of a wider partnership between the Japanese companies – given that Akio Toyoda’s carmaker is Subaru’s parent, as it is the brand’s largest shareholder.


And why Solterra? The name is a combination of the words Sol (in Latin, Portuguese and Spanish) and Terra (also in the same languages, including Italian), and was chosen to “appreciate mother nature and further develop a way of living with her”, according to the brand.

Two teasers of the car were released by Subaru: one showing the full car, but in a vague way, and the other showing the rear of the car, showing “EV” under the model name. Although not much, the public can already get an idea of ​​what Solterra looks like with concept images leaked from the site. motor vehicle (see below).

The preview clearly shows that the car is a “version” of the brand’s BZ4X, as both are very similar in appearance. In addition, Subaru also decided to use and rename the e-TNGA platform, which Toyota will build an entire battery-powered lineup in the coming years. In its products, the technology will be called e-Subaru Global Platform.

Therefore, we will be able to see the Solterra using lithium-ion batteries, probably with cells supplied by Panasonic, with a capacity of between 50 and 100 kWh that will ensure, according to Toyota’s original project, an autonomy between 300 and 500 kilometers, and possibly of reaching up to 600 km on various models. And of course, power between 110 and 200 hp or 400 hp in cars with two engines.

The platform is designed to be highly flexible for vehicles of different lengths, and can be used in front, rear and four-wheel drive configurations, thanks to the ability to fit the engine on both axles. The E-TNGA can also accept different battery sizes, and according to Toyota’s plans, six EVs are being developed with this technology.

Aside from using a shared platform, Subaru did not provide further technical details of the Soltera.

Subaru’s first EV is a milestone in its electrification plans. Recently, the brand launched hybrid versions of the Forester, Impreza and XC models. The goal now is for at least 40% of its global sales to be electric or hybrid by 2030.

Previously, Subaru had planned its first electric car based on an existing model built on its global technology, but changed the concept due to cooperation with Toyota.
