Over time, several customers of Porsche took it upon themselves to design and build DIY tents for their 911 roofs. It’s clear the Stuttgart-based carmaker has been taking details since then, with the roof tent supplied direct from the manufacturer going on sale from November for Porsche 911 and several other examples in the series.
A tent designed to Porsche standards
The new “Porsche Tequipment” roof tent, as the manufacturer calls it, can accommodate two people and comes in a stylish hard shell. It was designed at the development center in Weissach, Germany, and is performance oriented, mainly because it is more aerodynamic than most tents of its kind. The tent is designed for four-season use, as it has waterproof zippers, a quilted and insulated lining, a rain cover for the door, two side windows and a roof window.
Alternatively, you may be surprised by the size of the tent that can be fitted into a Porsche 911 format car, although it can also be accommodated by other models in the range. Folded, it is 146 cm wide, 140 cm long and 33 cm high. The floor measures 210 cm long and 130 cm wide when the tent is folded up for use.
Opening and closing the tent should be a breeze, as it includes two pressure shock absorbers to help lift it. Four pegs to keep it taut so it doesn’t close are also attached. Then, the ladder is also connected and opens to strengthen the floor when it is fully unfolded. Additionally, a high-density polyurethane foam mattress is attached to the floor, which should make it comfortable from the start.
The total weight is 56 kg, and the recommended speed limit is 130 km/h when installed.
It is not yet available in our market
The asking price for this tent of yours is 4,980 euros, which equates to about $6,525 at the time of this writing. In fact, the tent will only be sold in Europe first, from November, while the date of its arrival on North American soil is still unknown.
We don’t yet know its selling price in local currency, but we do know that the roof tent can be fitted to a variety of Porsche models. The Macan, Panamera, Cayenne and electric Taycan can all be equipped with this tent. The 718 Cayman and Boxster are the only cars in the Porsche lineup that cannot be fitted with this optional camping kit.
