The only ecological rims for BMW from 2024


The BMW Group is expanding its operations in the field of sustainability and, from 2024, will use only aluminum wheels made from 100% green energy for its BMW and MINI brands.

For the BMW Group, this is another step towards its goal of creating a more sustainable supply in the automotive industry. This transition applies mainly to high-energy electrolysis used for the production of aluminum and the process of firing a wheel. To date, wheels accounted for about 5% of CO2 chain emissions.

The transition to more sustainable green-based production will reduce this production by more than 50%. Importantly, when you know that BMW buys approximately 10 million light alloy wheels per year from its suppliers, 95% of which are aluminum. This sustainable use of aluminum and its contracted suppliers will save up to 500,000 tons of CO2 per year. Aluminum has good recycling properties, which makes it easier to melt old wheels as part of a circular economy. It is therefore no longer necessary to turn to high-energy electrolysis to produce basic raw materials. Mini will be a pioneer in this area in 2023, when the brand begins to develop a new Countryman SUV with this new generation of wheels (made from 70% high-grade aluminum).

Dubai-produced aluminum is processed in a lightweight factory at BMW’s Landshut factory, where it is used to manufacture body equipment and drivetrain. 43,000 tons of “solar” aluminum thus obtained covers about half of the annual demand for a lightweight steel plant in Landshut.
