Mini presents the Aceman concept, its new electric urban crossover. 4.05 meters long, it will complete the city car version in 2023 alongside the hatch (Mini 3 doors). The latter will also be the first production model to receive this new face. It will be officially presented at the beginning of 2023, followed by Aceman and Countryman during the same year.
Its name refers to the late Paceman which was a 3-door sedan. The Oxford brand takes the idea of a coupe SUV but this time adds two doors and only electric motors. The Mini 3 and 5 doors as well as the Countryman will continue to offer the same heat offer.
“Mini’s strategy is based on 3 pillars: introducing a 100% electric range by 2030, expanding the brand’s presence in Asia and improving the SUV offering”, explains Stefanie Wurst, Director of Mini. With the new Aceman, the manufacturer ticks all the right boxes.
The Aceman will compete with new competitors of the same type from Audi, Cupra, and Toyota from 2024. Until now, the rare electric urban SUVs like Hyundai Kona, Opel Mokka-e, DS3 Crossback E-tense have such a solid format.
This model will also be the first of a new electric range to be produced at the new Chinese plant in Zhangjiagang that Mini shares with Great Wall through a partnership. Mini reproduces the same strategy as Smart on number 1 by many manufacturers today: design in Europe and produce in China.
The Aceman shows a full silhouette enhanced by a large width (1.99 m), low height (1.59 m) and 20” rims. The curve, a hallmark of Mini design, gives way to a few body curves on the fenders, wheel arches and hood. Hatch will also follow this “solid” model.
The backlight signature can be customized.
Attractive design elements such as the Union Jack-shaped taillights, octagonal grille and front optics have been updated through extensive LED lighting work. All these features are customizable. For example, the customer will be able to choose between several light signatures for the rear lights, including the Union Jack, and several colors for the strip around the grille.
The very minimalist interior goes back to the brand’s origins and follows the instructions of its founder, Alec Issigonis. That is, reducing the design and control to the essentials. The goal has been achieved because the cockpit of the Aceman is made up of a steering wheel, a round touch screen and a central console reduced to the lowest level. The production model will follow this small trend.
The circular OLED touchscreen installed in the floating position is a world first in the automotive industry, reports the manufacturer. It is equipped for the first time for the Mini with the Android operating system. It allows to create a link with the curiosity dashboard. The fabric-covered end is designed as a sound bar that extends over the doors. Its design makes it possible to reflect images projected from the ceiling accompanied by a sound environment to immerse the occupants in an emotional state, explains Mini. The driver always benefits from a new dashboard.
Light and sound are part of this concept that reacts (inside and outside) according to the situations that arise. For example, when the car is unlocked or charging, the sound and light are activated.
Moving the starter, gear selector and parking brake controls below the dashboard has opened up storage space on the floor between the driver and passenger seats that extends to the rear seats. On it can be placed a cup holder and various storage modules.
Through this concept, Mini intends to provide the 5 occupants with a fun, enjoyable and entertaining environment. Lots of sounds and light animations accompany the colorful interior trim. The chairs, for example, are covered with “Desigual” style fabrics that combine textures, colors and reliefs. The steering wheel and door handles are upholstered in velvet. Finally, don’t wait for skins, Aceman won’t give any.
The space in the back seats seems decent for a car of this size, (it was impossible to get in) and especially for legs compared to the DS3 Crossback E-Tense. For now, Mini remains tight-lipped about the trunk volume, engine and battery capacity of its production model. One thing is certain, the capacity will be greater than that of the current Cooper SE (32.6 kWh). Aceman’s design, designed for electricity, will allow the battery to be placed on the floor, therefore greater capacity. It is estimated around 50 kWh, the total capacity of the pack that will equip the Aceman.
The Mini Aceman concept will be seen in public for the first time on August 23 at Gamescom 2022 dedicated to video games, which will be held in Cologne.
