The Mitsubishi L200 Triton Sport doesn’t deserve to be where it is

Despite being as fashionable as the SUV segment, the pickups and midsize trucks category is not as volatile. The Toyota Hilux doesn’t give anyone a chance, though Chevrolet S10 sometimes try to make him angry. Good models come to nothing and this is the case with the Mitsubishi L200 Triton Sport.

Increase the number of Fenabrave, we have up to the month of April a total of 13,557 Hilux units sold against only 3,769 of the L200 Triton. It is the fourth best-selling mid-size truck in Brazil, ahead of only the Nissan Frontier and Volkswagen Amarok, but with a four-month backlog that represents Toyota’s 30 days.

And he just didn’t deserve that, honestly. During the test week of the Mitsubishi L200 Triton Sport HPE-S, it was clear that it has the quality of having more space in the segment than its name implies in the document. Although, in this top version, it costs R$311,990 and is one of the most expensive in the category.

Not you

When Nissan introduced the revised Frontier, the Japanese brand boasted about the fact that its truck was the first with traffic alert and a rear bumper that doubles as a step. But even he forgot that he already had a Mitsubishi L200 Triton Sport.

And the truck list of standard items in the HPE-S version is quite full. It has automatic emergency braking, dual-zone digital air conditioning, LED headlights with automatic high beam, traction and stability control, front and rear parking sensors, blind spot alert, cross-traffic alert and decision assistant. .

It also has an electrically adjustable driver’s seat, height and depth adjustable steering wheel, face key, electrically adjustable and electrically adjustable rear view mirror, headlight washers, photochromic interior mirror, rain sensor, as well as multimedia center with Android Auto. and Apple CarPlay. connected via a USB cable.

sharp view

This extensive list of standard products is not only an attempt to justify the price of more than R$300,000, but also the placement of medium-sized pictures. They’re in style and more and more owners of luxury sedans and luxury SUVs are trading their city cars for pickup trucks, even if they’re real duds.

But the latter did not follow this added value. There is no average take in the passing section beyond the same finish, while not bad at all. But among all the models in the category, the L200 Triton Sport has the best cabin. It is filled with plastic, but the feeling that you have paid a lot is evident there – unlike the Frontier and Hilux.

The leather on the steering wheel is of excellent brand quality and there are real depth and height adjustments – unlike the S10 where the steering wheel is attached to the dashboard or the Hilux which even has a height adjustment, but which changes between very close to the windshield and affixed to the panel. The seats are comfortable and have a lot of adjustment, they don’t exceed the Frontier.

The hard plastics used are of moderately high quality, fit well and have a pleasing design. Mitsubishi used leather covered only on the doors and, surprisingly, on the bottom of the console, near the gear knob, but which has little contact with the hands.

But a big (or rather small) feature stands out: the multimedia center. It is too small for the large panel of the L200 Triton. In addition, it has exaggerated edges and looks more like the middle ones put on sale for PCD SUVs from the past, where even the trunk lid was optional. At least it has Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

It deserves another boost for the rear air conditioning system. It uses roof vents that draw air up front and re-distribute it more forcefully at the back. The wind can be directed by a vane that looks like a small sunshade. Another eccentricity is the start button on the left (hello Porsche).

play separately

But the pickup truck isn’t built with a Porsche interior with a certain level of luxury and grunt. They are for heavy lifting and need to be beefy. And that L200 Triton is a lot. The strength of the bodywork, its durability and ease that overcomes holes, rough surfaces and any kind of perrengue is clear.

It has the advantage of 4 × 4 traction that can be started on asphalt, unlike all its competitors. And it is especially in this type of terrain that it shines, especially on the road. It stays stable and doesn’t get hit by bumps like other trucks, giving you the confidence to go faster.

On the highway it is not noisy and hardly jumps, unlike in the city and on the ground. Like all medium trucks it has a bouncy character. But the L200 does not make this movement vertically like others, but laterally, requiring frequent adjustments of the steering wheel in the city and, especially, on the ground. On the road, by the way, it is easy to make Triton escape.

The good thing is that the steering, despite the old hydraulic system, is surprising and well placed. He’s heavy, especially tactically, but there’s no need to skip a biceps workout after a goal. The good thing is that when running, it takes a better level of effort, in addition, it has a lot of views from the road, which helps to drive more pleasantly.

the number is false

In recent times, every medium truck seems to be responsible for having at least 200 hp in Brazil. The lack of that magic number has always been a major criticism of the Toyota Hilux and the absence of the Mitsubishi L200 Triton Sport. There is 190 hp and 43.9 kgfm of torque offered by the 2.4 turbo diesel four-cylinder.

But practice is different. The Triton drives very well, with acceleration and the presence of a diesel sound leading to more acceleration. It’s smooth, with a little vibration, but always the presence of sound. Helping the engine is a new six-speed automatic transmission that appears to have been developed by a brand that has competitive pilots in it, as is the case with Mitsubishi.

The transmission is smooth when driving at a smooth and comfortable pace, such as in the city and during a road trip. But when he descends, he starts to make changes a little more calmly like in more sports cars. This is consistent with the dampers behind the steering wheel which are mounted on the steering column, again like a racing car.

Well balanced, the gearbox allows the 2.4 engine to fly through the range below 2000 rpm on the road while the L200 Triton doesn’t hold its breath. But when it comes to starting over there is a catch. The engine responds well, but the gearbox takes a while to react. He quickly downshifts into one gear, but holds onto the next for a few seconds before shifting and causing the truck to skid.

And surprising use. The L200 Triton managed to achieve an average of 11.2 km/l. Most of his journey was on the road, whose official consumption is 10.8 km / l, while in the city it is 9.4 km / l.

Who saw you, who sees you

Of all the characteristics of the Mitsubishi L200 Triton Sport, the appearance is perhaps the most attractive. And to think that before the restyling, it was the ugliest truck in the category, it now competes with the Nissan Frontier for the title of the most beautiful. The lines are solid, modern and in line with the visual identity that Mitsubishi has been using in recent times.

The high front end with the split headlights is the most striking step. The upper part is connected to the front grille and brings daylight together with the lower beam. The top light and the arrow are on the lower block, which stands because of the square fender. The X-Grid has chrome edges and accentuates the black interior.

The rear, on the other hand, is not much different from other pickup trucks, with rectangular taillights that take up almost the entire length of the segment. But the curve that starts at the side and cuts across the bucket is worth highlighting because it gives the Triton a stronger feel. And there’s no way to say that the beautiful metallic blue color matched the L200’s bodywork perfectly.

decision

It is not easy to compete with Toyota Hilux, which is based on the reputation of indestructibility and the large dealer network of the Japanese brand. But the Mitsubishi L200 Triton didn’t deserve to sell as little as it does. It has characteristics at least up to the level of the Chevrolet S10, with characteristics very close to those of the Ford Ranger.

The Triton is undoubtedly the best looking truck in the category and the one with the most refined interior, which really gives the impression of not being a popular car with a bucket and a bucket. Estradeira, has moderate utility, good performance and excellent technology. It flies more than it should in the city and on the ground, but almost all opponents are like that.
