In 2021, Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) had already announced that it intends to explore the possibility of using, for its heavy vehicles, electric mechanics in which energy will be produced on board, from hydrogen cells or known fuel cells. Currently, the company has continued with the hydrogen electric Land Rover Defender, being the first model of the group to use this technology, developed by the partner companies of the project.

The innovation opens up the opportunity to develop a sustainable and self-charging car (Land Rover Defender electric). In this way, electric cars do not have to store the energy needed to work in the battery pack that replaces it, since this process is done separately to power the engine. To this end, JLR began to test this alternative, generating electricity on board using hydrogen fuel cells, and storing it in a small battery, which has between 5% and 10% of the capacity that would be needed, if only used to accumulate, cell cars of fuel needs time to start converting hydrogen into electrical energy.

The JLR project was christened Zeus, and was developed by the group in collaboration with AVL, Marello and Delta Cosworth. The fuel cell develops 90kW, something around 122 hp, and is placed in front of the car, and the Defender carries two electric motors, one for each axle, with 200 hp in each unit. In addition, the car has a battery that guarantees a cold start, as well as when you accelerate hard, trying to use 400 cb. In addition, it is still possible to calculate the capacity of 16.7 kWh, which is placed under the platform, between the front and rear seats.

So far, the group said it is developing a platform for battery-powered vehicles that can be easily converted to fuel cell electric models. That is, it will be possible to fuel the car with the help of hydrogen. Although many analysts believe that generating electricity from hydrogen is inefficient, it would still be a good alternative to larger vehicles, such as the Defender. This is because they need a lot of freedom, even in difficult terrain conditions. With the fuel cell, the Defender avoids transporting between 800 and 1000 kg of batteries, if the pack has a capacity of between 120 kWh and 150 kWh. However, for the first time, it will only be able to operate in one country, in addition to being in a region that has networks of green hydrogen filling stations, with a purity level close to 100%.
