The electric Opel Astra may be entitled to an upgraded version

Opel is currently working on an electric version of its Astra. A sporter version will also be in the program.

Opel, like all other manufacturers, must switch to all-electric. And for good reason, the European Union voted this summer to ban the brand from selling hot cars from 2035.

If the company, bought by PSA in 2017 and now part of the Stellantis group, already offers a few electric models, including its Corsa-e and its Mokka-e, it wants to go further. And it is another star of the range that this engine will be released soon.

Electric Astra in anticipation

In fact, It has been known for several months now that the Opel Astra will soon be equipped with a 100% electric engine.. This new version was confirmed last September by the brand, which however did not provide any information on its technical sheet. It should however keep its EMP2 platform, like the Peugeot 308 and DS 4., which will also go electric soon. However, this has been modified slightly over the years to allow the installation of hybrid engines, hybrid or not.

But if nothing has been confirmed yet, it is rumored that a higher version with 300 horse power is in preparation. Interviewed by the newspaper Top Gear on this, brand design director Mark Adams said that “yes, we are working on things that are not too far off, we will start in this direction“.

If no information has been revealed about the performance of this version, the model should be more logical for sports according to Mark Adams:There is a fine line between being perceived as sporty and powerful, which is a good trait. But at the same time, you don’t necessarily want an overly bright design. It’s about finding a good middle ground“.

Some corrections

According to the architect, This electric motorization is compatible with specific restrictions, especially in terms of aerodynamics. Therefore, some changes should be made to the compact line, for the time given only in the combination of heating and recharging, in order to reduce the drag coefficient. Like The future electric Opel Astra could compete with the Volkswagen ID.3 GTXwhose power should also be close to 300 horses, the compact will probably be available in other reasonable versions.

In its standard version, it can take the Combo-e Life exhaust chain, which is also based on the EMP2 platform. As a reminder, it mounts a 50 kWh battery and displays 136 horsepower, just like the Opel Corsa-e. The launch of the electric Opel Astra is planned for next year, as are the Peugeot 308 and DS 4, both are also available as plug-in hybrids.
