To replace its mid-term Karoq model, Skoda has made a number of changes to stay in line with the current aesthetic. But above all, the manufacturer has improved the aerodynamics of its SUV by 10% with a Cd of 0.30 (air vents for the grille, rear spoiler, rims and underbody trim). For the key, the drop in consumption without using the light hybrid, which reduces the manufacturing costs, and thus the selling price.
All the more reason to take a closer look at the two engines tested here at the Business: 3-cyl. 1.0 turbo-petrol 110 hp with manual gearbox (31,900 euros including tax); 4-cyl. 1.5 TSI 150 hp in DSG7 box (35,690 euros including tax).
At 110 hp, this Karoq shows 200 Nm of torque from 2,000 rpm, very good for fast and easy to have this traction power without connecting gears. Not lacking in power in revving, this generously-sized sub-SUV doesn’t perform well on long road trips in charge. This is also not his duty to the trader alone on the board and on the second network of the road or in the city. This 1.0 TSI does its job but it will tend to overuse if you want to maintain a good speed, not far from 8.0 l/100 km. In the city or at a sufficient speed, it can go down to 7.0 l.
Skoda Karoq: 110 hp or 150 hp?
It is in this area that the second gasoline engine finds its advantage. This 150 hp 1.5 TSI Evo, with cylinder deactivation at enhanced speed under low load, shows great stability, including in the automatic gearbox. And its driving ability deserves a top spot. During our tests of the DSG7, we used 7.2 l/100 km, very reasonable for a petrol engine of this power. In addition to its operational flexibility and its ability to recover, it faces the road in long journeys, its performance speaks for itself. It will be criticized for its noise emission at acceleration, and almost diesel grunt.
Skoda has chosen foam plastics and high-quality cabin furniture (sliding or removable rear seats as an option). On the quality of manufacturing, this Karoq, whatever the version, does not envy the German competitors of the Volkswagen group or the French leaders. A good choice therefore for the manager who wants to strengthen his budget without sacrificing the quality of road services.
