In the automotive vocabulary there is a word perfumery. Just as people prayed to the gods through the smoke from the burning of plants which, in turn, gave off different smells (hence the first reports of perfumes), the word in the world of cars also seeks to evoke something: sports, adventure, off-road capability or whatever.

But, in the end, the appeal is limited to the look, leaving only technical changes in the smell.

THE Volvo entered this business with his own scent, let’s say: the Polestar Engineering. However, with a stronger smell. Apart from choosing XC60 T8, which does not call for sports, but the 407 hp speaks for itself, the Swedish perfume is enhanced by the improvement of the suspension. Before the details, however, let’s get a feel for the essence of the Polestar.

It was born in 1996 under the name of Flash Engineering, a team that participated in the Swedish Touring Car Championship (STCC), the Stock Car Viking.. The Polestar Racing nomenclature emerged in the late 2000s, when they began using Volvo models in races.

Nine years later, Polestar became an official partner and also began modifying street cars. In July 2015, it was finally acquired and upgraded to the Volvo “AMG” range. However, it soon became an independent brand dedicated to electric vehicles. One industry, however, is still responsible for modifying designs: Polestar Engineered.

Ready. Let’s get back to the XC60. Perfumery begins with the bottle. The grille and bumpers (front and rear) with a sharper design are unique to this version. But what is interesting even in the image is 22-inch wheels with 265/35 tires (on the XC60 T8 R-Design, it’s 21″).

They’re good for the eyes, but not good for your back. If you run over a cookie crumb, you’ll hear it. In addition, the Brembo calipers have an attractive yellow color. At the back, the dual exhaust has the Polestar Engineered lettering neatly carved into the top – just like AMG, by the way.

Sporty, economical, equipped and safe. For those who have their eyes on a premium SUV, but want to break away from traditional brands, the XC60 is a good choice (Image: Disclosure) – Image: Auto Esporte

If the package is already good, the contents are even better. The XC60 Polestar Engineered is not limited in design changes. Volvo installed shock absorbers from Sweden’s Öhlins as well, famous in the two-wheel world.

The game costs around R$ 22,000 (!) and features dual flow valve technology to provide maximum wheel-to-ground contact, regardless of bumps and other surface imperfections.

With the adapter suspension (which reduces the height of the body to 1.5 cm and, therefore, the center of gravity) and strong springs, The SUV has a power that many envy the sedan.

In about 1,000 kilometers of the test, the organization behaved in an alarming way: it controlled body rotation and load transfer in sharp curves and provided the necessary comfort for five occupants on long stretches of road. And soundproofing makes the closet feel like a library.

The XC60 T8 already has the original performance. Despite being a hybrid that focuses on fuel consumption – it does more than 20 km / l on the road and uses a lot of electricity in the city – it has no less than 407 hp.

Power comes from the intersection of a four-cylinder turbo 2.0 with 320 hp and 40.8 kgfm (front) and an electric one (rear), which produces the equivalent of 87 hp and 24.5 kgfm.

With all-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic transmission, the SUV accelerates from zero to 100 km / h in 5.3 seconds. And what’s interesting is the included torque. That’s 65.2 kgfm available when you put your foot on the accelerator.

The XC60 Polestar Engineered catapults impressively and effortlessly – it doesn’t even feel like it weighs more than two tonnes.

The steering can be more weighted so that the driver feels more confident in it, which is straightforward. Even in the most sporty driving mode, it is very light.

There are five settings. Safi introduces the use of an electric car in everyday life, with a range of up to 40 km. Hybrid uses both engines and balances performance and utility.

In Power, named Polestar Engineered, driving parameters, gear changes, throttle response and braking are tuned for sporty handling. AWD works with all-wheel drive. And with Individual, you choose your preferences.

If the exterior design didn’t convince you, the modern air of the interior, with a sporty feel, might. Starting with the gold seat belts (Mercedes-AMG GT R style), which immediately impresses. The seats are also more sporty and covered in leather, with the cabin being in charcoal color.

All with the best finish and fitna. The foot pegs and throttle are made of aluminum. The digital touch, of course, is in charge of the configurable instrument panel (12.3 inches) and the central Sensus with a 9-inch screen, which is the reference.

Through it, it is possible to control practically all the controls of the car, from climate control to safety technologies. And it’s clear XC60 Polestar Designed it’s well equipped in that regard – like all Volvos.

The aim of the Swedish brand is that no accidents and its cars cause death. For this, the SUV includes a series of accessories, such as City Security, an automatic braking system to avoid or reduce collisions. The technology also helps the driver, for example, avoid a near collision more easily. The XC60 also drives “alone”.

Adaptive cruise control has steering assist and lane departure warning, which provides an audible warning and automatically turns the steering wheel to avoid a potential crash between 65 km/h and 200 km/h.

You missed the price, didn’t you? Well then. The XC60 Polestar Engineered debuted at the end of 2019 at a price of R$335,900.

A disaster later and it has already jumped to R$ 361,950. Versions below, T8 R-Design and T8 writing, the cost is mainly R$ 30 thousand less. However, the model remains cheaper than traditional rivals BMW, Audi, Porsche and Mercedes.

Volvo also offers the S60 Polestar Engineered sedan, with a similar hybrid package. Who said the best perfumes are French and come in the smallest bottles?
