Test: Maserati Grecale Trofeo, with 530hp V6, faster than Porsche, BMW and Mercedes | Measurements

The decisive phase of Maserati’s revival has not yet begun, but the first positive signs are there, as Davide Grasso, CEO of the Italian brand, explains: “In just two and a half years, which is the time that this team has the head of Maserati, sales in 2021 were 41% higher than in 2020. (24,270 vehicles), sales grew 47% (more than 2 billion US Dollars) and operating profit was 5.1%.

In addition to the ambitious project of future releases, It is possible to say that 2022 should go down in the history of the manufacturer as the year when the new Maserati appeared.. At least that’s the plan.

For it to be successful, it will be important to have models that are well accepted in the international market, especially in the United States, China and Europe, something that Grasso is fully aware of: “Our share has been increasing constantly and the sales mix is balanced between America (35% ), China (32%) and Europe (21%)”. A record that should be combined with the arrival of the Grecale, which can now be ordered – from 71 thousand euros (R $ 392,000) to 111 thousand euros (R $ 612,000) of the Trofeo.

And Height 4.85 meters, is almost 15 cm shorter than the Levante, but 16 cm longer than the Alfa Romeo Stelvio, as well as 13 cm longer than the Porsche Macan. Not so important is the fact that the wheelbase has been increased by 8.3 cm compared to the “cousin” of Alfa, resulting in 2.91 m.

Back there is ample legroom and headroom. In fact, the rear seats are not much higher than the front ones, leaving a theater effect that usually pleases those traveling in the back. There are ventilation holes, but also a long, wide tunnel that will annoy station passengers.

already trunk, with 570 liters, is the largest in the community, clearly more than the Porsche competitor (458 l) and slightly larger than the BMW X3 and Mercedes-Benz GLC (both 500 l). It is also 10 liters larger than that of the “unwanted rival” Stelvio, which, as part of the same Stellantis Group, shares the platform.

After the first power contact on the track six months ago (and the car is still covered in the GT version, with a 300 hp four-cylinder engine and micro-hybrid technology), now it has been. it is possible to run the first kilometers on public roads with the top of the line Trofeo 3.0 V6 of 530 hpalbeit in a short and limited way. Between these two versions there is a second Grecale with a four-cylinder engine, also a mild hybrid, with 330 hp.

the engine has Twin Combustion technology with a pre-combustion chamber, which improves efficiency and which started in Maserati MC20. Compared to the original application, Grecale incorporates wet sump instead of dry sump. More important, however, is the fact that the SUV comes with a cylinder deactivation system.

We kept the same engine architecture, but changed what made sense to change based on the profile of this car, which is an SUV, not a sports car like the MC20.. In addition to the right bench to shut down at low or zero speed loads, we changed the turbos (smaller and with less pressure) and we have wet lubrication, which is what is used on the MC20 as it is a track car. and certain frequencies”, explains Federico de Medio, chief engineer of Grecale.

If large alloy wheels (21″, with 255/40 front and 295/35 rear tires), sportier tailpipes and carbon fiber inserts on the bumpers and side skirts ready to distinguish Trofeo from the more “peaceful” versions, the more powerful Grecale stands out more because of this very bright yellow tone.

THE A large grid looks like a mouth on Grecale’s face. The wider and more attractive C column gains more prominence in the two more powerful Grecales. back, the boomerang-shaped taillights are inspired by those of the 3200 GT.

I re-enter the Grecale, whose interior is no longer full of the camouflage that was present in the prototype. one time, attention is drawn to three-dimensional carbon fiber and perforated leather, as well as contrasting stitching. (yellow, in this case).

There are almost no buttons, only present on the steering wheel with a reduced diameter and a flat base. The space between the front seats is empty, not least because there is no lever for the ZF eight-speed automatic gearbox. To command it, there are buttons between the two screens of the command area: one above, 12.3″, for the multimedia center, and lower, 8.8″, for the air conditioner.. Not to mention the large aluminum fins for manual turns, which help make driving more interesting.

But a great note of originality is given by the first digital watch used in Maserati and which works as a human-machine interface, generating a response signal whenever it receives voice commands, be it a compass or a G-force meter, for example. The instrument has modern graphics and is fully configurable.

Two knobs stand on the steering wheel. The one on the left is for starting or stopping the engine. The one on the right selects the driving mode, changing the driving parameters, speed, gearbox, engine sound and suspension. In this same knob it is possible to adjust the stiffness of the shock absorber.

comfort is as I can confirm, the most suitable choice for everyday life and for more efficient driving (even if it is difficult to reduce the consumption of 5.9 km/l). In the quiet tune you can see that the cabin has good sound insulation thanks to double glazing on the side. Right-clicking will notice that the gear changes are a little hard and yet smooth, at the same time the engine starts to “dry up”.

One more spin and The game invites me to drive harder, being necessary to reduce the height above the ground by 15 mm. At the same time, the engine is already screaming and commands more respect, with frequent “explosions” that strengthen all the emotions.

bright yellow: if the design and large 21-inch wheels are already impressive, in this color the Grecale stands out – Photo: Description

The other two methods could not be easily investigated because the test method was too small, but these are their calls. In Off-road, the transmission increases the amount of torque at low revsThe ground clearance increases by 20 mm and, to overcome the most demanding obstacles, you can climb another 10 mm.

and the way Corsa (Trofeo only), the icing on the cake, is closer to driving style than just drivingespecially by using start to control. It’s important to note that the automatic transmission works in perfect harmony with the sporty instincts of this V6. In Sport and Corsa modes, the tachometer needle sticks to the 7,100 rpm limit when using the paddle shifters.

It was not possible to use the high speed of the Grecale Trofeo, which would only be possible on permitted roads such as the German Autobahn. According to Maserati, 0 to 100 km / h is done in 3.8 seconds (reaches 200 km/h in 13.8 s) and The maximum speed is 285 km / h.

These are numbers that exceed – significantly, in some cases – those of its main rivals.all with six-cylinder engines: Porsche Macan GTS (0 to 100 km/h in 4.5 s and a maximum of 272 km/h), BMW X3 M (4 s and 250 km/h), Mercedes-AMG GLC 63 ( 4 250 km/h) and the closest, Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio (3.8 seconds and 283 km/h).

In the other corners that allowed for some change, the quick steering response was convincing, without being too light or too heavy. The strength of the braking system has not been tested very rigorously, but it is it proved to be strong with its ventilated and perforated discs on all four wheels. Even in wet asphalt areas, all-wheel drive made it possible to maintain satisfactory levels of gripand a torque delivery system that adapts to your driving style and the type of pavement.

The conclusion is that Grecale Trofeo is a luxury SUV that has enough features to be a real alternative to German Porsche, BMW and Mercedes-Benz., taking advantage of not only emotional criteria (prestige of the Italian brand, high performance) but also rational criteria (large cabin and trunk and overall quality). It is a right of difference that even money often has trouble buying.
