Tesla’s neighbor Svolt in Germany

Chinese battery maker Svolt has revealed plans to build a cell assembly plant in Germany to supply electric vehicles, choosing the state of Brandenburg – which is also home to a Tesla factory – as the location. The company said: “Svolt is responding to the dynamics of this market with a substantial expansion by building additional local capacity.” Svolt took over the Lauchhammer site, including buildings and infrastructure, from Vestas, a wind turbine manufacturer, last August.

Start of production in 2025

The planned site in Lauchhammer will have a capacity of 16 gigawatt hours per year and will start production in 2025, said a spokesman for the company, which is the second from Chinese carmaker Great Wall Motors.

“Electrification, but also government decisions, are driving demand for electric vehicles,” Svolt CEO Hongxin Yang said.

Second factory in Germany

In 2020, Svolt announced an investment of up to 2 billion euros to build a cell production plant as well as a module and pack plant in southwest Germany, more precisely in the Saarland, with a planned production capacity of 24 GWh. The factory will supply EV batteries to Stellantis.
