Team Penske’s Kiwi still has a small chance

Dominating the Portland Grand Prix from start to finish, Scott McLaughlin (Penske) remains a championship contender on the eve of the final.

Starting from a good position, the New Zealander from Team Penske easily took his third win of the season ahead of teammate Will Power.

The Australian remains the favorite in the championship race ahead of the final round at Laguna Seca next weekend as he is 20 points clear of teammate Josef Newgarden and the Ganassi boys’ best placed Scott Dixon in third yesterday in Portland.

Two other drivers can still take the championship but with a slim chance: respectively dropped to 39 and 41 points, Indy 500 winner Marcus Ericsson (Ganassi) and McLaughlin have to win California without their direct rivals registering big points to be crowned.

Not included in the discussion, Pato O’Ward (McLaren) failed at the bottom of the Portland stage in front of Graham Rahal (RLL), Andretti drivers Colton Herta and Alex Rossi, Newgarden and the best starter Callum Ilott (JHR).
