Szafnauer believes Alpine F1 will overtake Aston Martin in 2023

Alpine team boss Otmar Szafnauer said Alpine could stay ahead of Aston Martin next season despite Fernando Alonso’s decision to switch teams in 2023.

Alpine had hoped to extend Alonso’s contract for just one season, but was surprised when Aston Martin announced a multi-year deal with the two-time Spanish F1 champion.

Shortly after, Alpine also lost its reserve driver Oscar Piastri, who is said to have signed for McLaren and is expected to replace Daniel Ricciardo next year.

Despite these setbacks, Szafnauer is confident that Alpine has the strength and depth to stay ahead of its rivals next season. And as a former team boss at Aston Martin, he knows the situation.

“I know both teams well,” he said. “I think I do, because I spent twelve years in another team, more than I know all the people here yet!” He said, as quoted by Motorsport.com.

“Since I left in December, they have hired more people, some of whom I have been part of recruiting, including Dan Fallows and Eric Blandin from Mercedes. So I know what they are trying to do,” he added.

“I know the people there and I know this team here, and they all have a lot of potential,” he said. “But as we sit here today, this team is working at the highest level. It is difficult to predict the future, but in the near future, for sure, Alpine will continue to work at this level, if not better.
