System 1 | Nyck de Vries was on the Aston Martin F1 roster for 2023

With a ninth place finish at Monza for Williams F1 after replacing Alex Albon on short notice, Nyck de Vries caused a sensation in the Formula 1 scene and now looks set to start in 2023.

Helmut Marko, Red Bull’s consultant, has admitted that the Dutchman could have his place at AlphaTauri next season if Pierre Gasly leaves Alpine F1. The 27-year-old driver also tested the French team’s 2021 single-seater squad in Hungary today.

In Italy, de Vries had also driven an Aston Martin during Friday’s PR1 before finding himself at Williams on Saturday morning. Silverstone team principal Mike Krack hailed the Formula E world champion’s incredible weekend.

“I take my hat off to him for the way he handled the situation,” said the leader of Luxembourg.

“He jumped into the Williams and from what I heard he was in the paddock club when we called him. It’s true that he already knew the car, but how much is that really?”

“He had less practice than the others but he did very well in Alex’s car. Of course the circuit went well with his car. We knew the Williams would be strong but we had to succeed. .”

“In the first round in F1 it is very tight and more physical than Formula E for example. So I think he did a very good job.”

If Aston Martin F1 already has its two drivers from 2023 with Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll, Krack admits that de Vries was also considered by his team.

“Nyck is still on the list of potential drivers, including ours. Now he will be useful to any team that still has a position to fill.”
