System 1 | Alfa Romeo chose a conservative approach to help Zhou in Melbourne

When several drivers crashed in Melbourne last week, some of them highly experienced, Alfa Romeo described how his conservative approach gave Guanyu Zhou confidence in Albert Park.

The Chinese, the only player of this F1 season, finally lost at the points gate in Australia but still did another satisfying job for his team.

“Generally, it was another weekend from Zhou,” said Xevi Pujolar, who oversees song engineering at Alfa Romeo.

“We saw a lot of operators fall but for our part it was important to have a conservative attitude and take each session one after the other. You also had to not push too hard because that’s how you make mistakes and you lose value. Time.”

“We had a little difference in qualification. It was difficult for him to get P5 Cli’s C5 to work but it was also difficult for Valtteri (Bottas) to get all the results from the tire. The team must understand why.”

Qualifying so far seems to be causing problems for Zhou who has yet to reach Q3. But Pujolar greets the Chinese in the race.

“Qualifying was a challenge for Zhou but we know he is still well in the race and he proved that again in Melbourne.

“He didn’t get any points but he was fighting for the top 10 until the final round which was very good. If Alex Albon came out from behind he could control him and score points.”
