The luxury car market is booming. Sales of motorhomes and vans have exploded since the Covid crisis. But a new phenomenon has been gaining momentum for a while: it involves turning your everyday car into a convertible. The latest innovation in this area comes not from a developer but from a manufacturer: Dacia.
The Romanian brand of the Renault group is increasingly present in the recreational vehicle market. And he proves it by launching his new project. Called “Outdoor Life”, it takes the form of a wooden box weighing less than 50 kg, placed in the trunk of a car. “It’s an all-in-one box that also includes a storage capacity of 220 liters,” says François Aupierre, Dacia’s head of equipment and conversions.
In just one minute with two people, then it is possible to change the car into a bed. “To do that, you have to move the rear seats forward and then fold them and remove the luggage cover. Then we put the boards of the base of the bed and remove the base of the bed”, François Aupierre shows us. The last step: installing a small foldable mattress that also fits in the trunk.
Dacia Manifesto: ideas that can inspire future models
“The result is a bed with a length of 1.90 meters and a width of 1.30 meters. Access is easy as you enter directly through the back doors”, notes François Aupierre. If the bed is comfortable and big enough for two people, you should not get up too quickly because the height under the ceiling is a little tight. At least on the Dacia Jogger, which will be the first car in the range to take advantage of this removable bed. “This army will be available on the Jogger in positions 5 and 7 from next year”, says François Aupierre, hinting that it will be launched in the spring. Finally, other models of the brand may benefit from it, especially the future Duster.
