Currently, I use Google Maps on my smartphone but it would be nice to have built-in navigation in the SUV.

I recently purchased a pre-owned BMW X5 (F15, 3rd gen). The navigation included in it is outdated and useless. Obviously it doesn’t have CarPlay. Although I currently work with Google Maps on my mobile phone, it would be nice to have built-in navigation. The current navigation system is a 2013 version and does not recognize any fixed locations.
Talking to a BMW service advisor, he said it can be upgraded at a price of 9K INR. I wonder if it’s worth it. Does anyone have any thoughts/tips on this?
PS: I am in Mumbai, if it helps.
Here’s what GTO had to say on the matter:
Not at all and IMHO, that applies to all navigation systems “built in” by car manufacturers. Google Maps is the best and provides up-to-date information, routes and traffic data. My smartphone fits perfectly in the cup holder with the screen facing me. If this is not the case for you, either rely on voice commands or contact the owner of the smartphone.

Not worth it! If you plan to keep the car, a local equipment dealer can help you with an MMI retrofit kit based on your current I-drive model.
Here’s what BHPian kdp had to say on the matter:
BMW maps are not bad, especially if they are modern. There are times when I prefer BMW maps over Google maps. For example, in Bangalore, as a non-local, I have been led on increasingly narrow “Main” roads; while relying on Gmaps. The BMW maps, for the same run the next day, on the other hand, put me on real highways. (much longer, but ultimately about the same travel time. And yes, Gmaps is set to reduce travel time). It loses traffic information, but the integrated map has a nice interface and it’s useful to see directions on the HUD.
It doesn’t have to cost an arm and a leg to update BMW maps. it may even be free. I’m assuming you have a CIC Head unit if it’s a 2013 map. I had NBT on my F25. DM me if you need a guide on how to do that.
