George Russell has reason to celebrate and, at the same time, regrets the 4th place he won in the Belgian GP this Sunday (28) – he beat Max Verstappen. Being off the podium by just one position allows for two analyzes of Mercedes’ performance at Biashara-Francorchamps.
Firstly, Russell noted that the German team’s Friday and Saturday at the Belgian track was poor – so fighting for a podium finish in the race is a definite improvement. At the same time, however, failing to overtake Carlos Sainz, 3rd – when Mercedes had “better speed than Ferrari”, in the Briton’s opinion – is something to regret.
“Painful feelings, because if you had told me yesterday that you would be 2 seconds off the podium – by virtue and by pure speed – I would have told you that it would be a big recovery. When I was taking the second lap, I thought, “this is it”. But I had two bad laps following, the tires came out of the right window. In formula 1tires are always something we talk about — when they’re in the right place, they change,” analyzed Russell.
“We need to look at that (race speed better than Ferrari). Indeed, today, our race speed was better than theirs. At worst, we were like Ferrari – but Max was flying today.
After the action in Belgium, formula 1 it will return next weekend, between the 2nd and 4th of September, to the Dutch doctor, in Zandvoort. Max Verstappen leads the championship with 284 points.
