George Russell closed Friday (9) with fifth place in FP2 of the Italian GP, more than 0s722 behind leader Carlos Sainz. The Mercedes Brit is keen to maintain his form after a good second place at Zandvoort last week.

For that, however, the performance of the W13 for classification and, therefore, for the Monza race, needs to be improved. And Russell admitted that the position in training reflected a surprising day in Italy.

“We looked strong in FP1 but Ferrari and Red Bull took us a step further, or maybe we took a step back,” said George.

For a driver who finished fourth this season, the Italians have an advantage in the weekend planning. “I think we are similar to Red Bull but Ferrari look better and in a racing environment they can have a new reality to offer and that will be something we will have to deal with.”

What worries Russell for the weekend sequence is walking behind the McLaren, more precisely Lando Norris, who was 0s048 ahead of the Mercedista. “We are behind and, therefore, we will have a little work ahead to understand why that is,” he added.
