Renault and Nissan have placed their bet on electric cars in Brazil

At #ABX22, brands talked about the technologies they intend to bring to the local market and emphasized that the Brazilian consumer is ready for new offers.

There is still no agreement among manufacturers which solution will be the best to develop the electric car market in Brazil. There are different options, some of which have become more popular, such as pure electricity, while different hybrids continue in parallel.

The topic was discussed in detail in #ABX22 – Automotive Business Experiencethe main business meeting of the automotive and mobility ecosystem, held at the São Paulo Expo on September 8. Despite the different approaches adopted by the companies, the panel with the presidents of Renault, Nissan, Audi and Siemens Digital Industry Software came to the conclusion: electromobility is the future of business and is making great strides in the country.

Nissan wants to go from pure electric to hybrid

The potential of clean electric vehicles was highlighted by panelist Airton Cousseau, president of Nissan Mercosur. The executive points out that not only clean electric vehicles are part of the solution, but there is another hybrid technology that will soon be used in the country. The brand made history with the Nissan Leaf, a small car – medium by Brazilian standards – capable of easily covering Brazilians’ daily trips. Although the issue of freedom is still a stumbling block for many consumers, the president highlights the facts to help dispel fears. According to him, the average Brazilian driver drives, on average, 40 kilometers per day.

For those who want a hybrid, Nissan soon it will introduce models with E-Power technology, a solution that previously appeared on the Note and has already spread through the manufacturer’s lineup. Although not confirmed by the brand, the Kicks could be the first national car to adopt the system; and the offer must also be filled with imported designs. The release date is scheduled for 2023.

“It’s basically a car that uses electricity all the time, so the feeling will be that of driving a pure electric car. But the charging of the battery is not done at the exhaust, it’s done by the combustion engine, a small unit that can be gasoline, ethanol or flex. Engine provides a charge in the battery and, in turn, the traction unit is electric, which ensures fuel economy and the delivery expected from an electric car, such as instant power and torque , but with the advantage that it is not necessary to stop charging”, explains Cousseau.

Nissan still has fuel cell technology that uses ethanol, but it is in the development stage and promises to be used in a variety of vehicles in the next decade.

The end user advertises electric vehicles

The popularity of electric cars in Brazil is closely linked to the corporate segment, with significant sales to large companies and rental companies. Renault itself, however, noted that it is not only commercial customers who have calculated the total cost of running their cars before choosing an electric one. Recently launched in Brazil, Kwid E-Tech concentrated its sales on individuals, a group of consumers who bought 80% of the first batch of 750 units. The brand also has Zoe and has already confirmed Mégane E-Tech and two other models for 2023.

“We announced the arrival of the Mégane E-Tech for May next year, a car in a higher segment than the ones we have today. It is bigger in size, has advanced technology and has an attractive design”, says Ricardo Gondo. president from Renault do Brasil. The president also reinforced Renault’s range of electric vehicles, an offer that includes the Kangoo ZE Maxi and the future Mwalimu vehicle, both designed for the mission of the “last mile” – or last mile -, the last point of urban transport. . and products.

The launch has helped change a trend that was restricted, for the most part, to luxury consumers. “The charging segment still represents 65% of electric sales in Brazil. About 10% of the total license plates in that segment are already electric”, says Daniel Rojas, CEO of Audi do Brasil.

Concern with industry change involves many factors. The topic was addressed by Daniel Scuzzarello, CEO of Siemens Digital Industry Software. “It is necessary to create an entire ecosystem of electricity. There is a question of the need to increase demand and, in addition, to assure the sellers. In addition, the ecosystem can facilitate the nationalization of different stages of production. Brazil has a matrix of lithium, niobium and materials other important for the manufacture of batteries”, he says.

The executive remembers that Brazil has the challenge of producing and even nationalizing part of the development of these structures, investing in research and development.
