Let’s talk about the Porsche Macan GTS, an SUV that does not function as a sports utility vehicle and that offers numbers that leave nothing to be desired for the 911 Carrera. The model is a reflection of global market trends. Consumers want to buy SUVs and every industry has started offering jeeps.
In fact, it was a sports utility vehicle that saved the German brand from bankruptcy 20 years ago: the Cayenne. But without further ado, let’s move on to the Macan GTS, the spicier version of this mid-size utility, which has a suggested retail price of R$700,000.
The icing on the GTS cake is under the hood. The SUV has a 2.9 liter V6 biturbo unit with 440 hp and 56.1 kgfm of torque. This is the same engine that equips, for example, the Audi RS5 Sportback.
This unit is mated to a two-speed dual-clutch PDK, short for Porsche Doppelkupplungsgetriebe. Well, all you need to know is that this gearbox changes gears instantly, as it always works with the next gear shared earlier.
Traction is all-wheel drive, on demand, but the priority is to send torque to the rear wheels. After all, we are talking about Porsche. And this is almost their teaching. Fortunately.
All these mechanical devices give the GTS the ability to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.3 seconds. The brand advertises a top speed of 272 km/h. We have no doubt.
Please do not ask us about usage. We drove this car in its default configuration, always with the engine at full throttle and no shame whatsoever in mishandling the accelerator. The brand advertises 6.3 km / l in the city and 7.2 km / l on the highway. Very close numbers to what we recorded as RS5.
But what is interesting in this Porsche is its ridiculous character, very close to the brand’s coupes. That’s because it has an independent suspension with alternating arms at the front axle and a multi-link at the rear.
GTS even allows you to adjust not only the load, but also the height of the shock absorbers. That is, stop the car more crouched and to land more in the curves.
Periods and tracking errors do not affect GTS behavior. And somehow, the slightly higher head prevents it from scraping the bottom or bumper on any bumps on the tread or small slopes.
Snoring Macan GTS
It is also possible to adjust the exhaust noise. A button on the console activates the trumpets of the apocalypse and if a friend activates Sport Plus mode, it powers everything up in that Macan.
This mode keeps the engine always at a high rpm, so that the driver always has maximum torque. The shift is extended to a range of 4,500 rpm.
We tested the SUV on a winding track full of slopes, in the metropolitan area of Belo Horizonte (MG). You don’t have too much difficulty and you don’t even need to work on the box, because it is so strong that it faces everything without hesitation.
Inside the Porsche
The interior of the GTS impresses with the quality of the finish. The arrangement of the instruments is the same as in the Cayenne. The left start is part of the brand’s tradition. The heritage of the cars that competed at Le Mans, when drivers had to rush to the cars and start the engine. So the left hand on the ignition and the right hand free to engage first.
But what is interesting is the chronograph at the top of the panel. This analog marker is used to record lap times on a track. Porsche stuff.
So, after going up and down hilly hills, as if Brumadinho is Zermatt, the Macan GTS proved that an SUV can also be more than a stylish and luxurious car. But it is an exception to the rule.
