Porsche “Colorado” project?
Porsche Cayenne is 20 years old – Porsche Cayenne was launched 20 years ago. With its decision to create a “multi-use sports car”, Porsche poses a major challenge to its design office and its then boss, Harm Lagaay.
It was the first time in Porsche history that instead of a two-door GT, a 4-door SUV project was launched… The exact opposite of a sports car configuration.
But, Ferry Porsche had predicted as early as 1989: “If we were to create a ground car that meets our quality expectations and with a Porsche written on the front, it would be sold as well.”… Results? “Porsche third” begins to mature… Code name “Colorado”.
From the beginning, expectations were high: Porsche not only wanted to promote the sports SUV, the standard brand, but also to stand out with the best off-road competitors.
This high-risk project was finally undertaken in partnership with Volkswagen as part of a local project called “Colorado” and was officially announced in June 1998.
Porsche Cayenne and Volkswagen Touareg were participants in the platform. Despite the same architecture, each manufacturer previously used its own engines and worked on its own chassis settings.
Controversial in its infancy, it is one of Porsche’s best-selling varieties.
Unveiled by two V8 engines, either the Cayenne S and its 4.5 L engine producing 340 hp, or the 450 hp Cayenne Turbo, we can calculate top speeds of 242 and 266 km / h.
Off the road, the Cayenne driver can count on cuts, 100% locks and Porsche Suspension Management provided simultaneously with air suspension to provide up to 27.3 cm of ground clearance.
Shortly after its first world show in September 2002 at the Mondial de l’Auto in Paris, Cayenne became a symbol of worldwide success and immediately exceeded sales expectations.
Previously, 25,000 children were expected per year. During the first 8 years of the first generation, 276,652 copies were sold, which is about 35,000 vehicles a year.
Meanwhile, Million Cayenne has already made history. It started production in the summer of 2020. By 2021, the number of units presented was over 80,000.
