We picked up the Volkswagen.5 GTX ID, a new 100% German brand electric SUV. Shown at a price of over 59,000 euros, does this model really have value or should we prefer ID.4, even if it means putting a cross on the “coupe” side of the car, or going to see a side race? Answer in our full essay.

A sensible choice, then, since it all depends on the MEB platform similar to that of ID.4 (or even Skoda Enyaq and Audi Q4 Sportback), but with key technological updates. This version of GTX is an advanced version of the product. Presented as “sports” and marketing, what could be the real claim of this SUV? We took a wheel on the streets of Provence.
Everything in look
Built from an identity base.4, it is quite logical that ID.5 is very close to it in terms of dimensions. Na 4.60 meters high, is only two inches taller than its largest. Ergonomics in half mast
As for life on board, emotions are mixed. If storage spaces are practical and plentiful and the seating capacity is generous, control ergonomics leaves something to be desired. Despite the shortcuts, the air conditioner temperature controllers remain speculative and painful to handle, while the optional touch controllers are a good false idea. It is common to import rear windows instead of front ones, it is impossible to adjust the mirrors without checking the rotary controls, for example. At the wheel, fight the same: Touch pads are incomprehensible and the dynamic response imitated is a joke. Again, it is common to “press” on it by mistake, when the hand is just trying to put itself on the steering wheel.
On the contrary, the gear selector was moved closer to the instrument panel provides space on the central position, while being a pleasant handle. We only regret that the switches between the D (drive) and B (brake) modes are not accessible via the steering wheel controller which would be more playful.
Driving: ID.4 + 1

Despite this huge mass, 300 horsemen and 460 Nm of torque push the ID.5 GTX from 0 to 100 km / h in 6.3 seconds … the project has at least 88% of battery. Under this threshold, power and law are reduced, even if we continue to take good pictures in all situations.
In terms of consumption, we have reached an average ofmore than 18 kWh per hundred kilometers by connecting different types of road and air conditioner is turned on (heat pump is available as an option). For 77 kWh of battery, this therefore provides theoretical independence of approximately 420 km. For recharging, the ID.5 GTX has an 11 kW AC charger on board and can increase fuel by 150 kW from DC. At this rate, we can restore 100 miles of freedom in 6 big minutes.
3.0: real novel
We will have to get used to it, the new services offered by electric vehicles are connected more often software improvement. In ID.5, version 3.0 of the software is suitable (ID.4s will be able to benefit from it after the update) and brings real improvements.
First of all – and without preferential treatment – driving aids are enriched byroute change support. When conditions allow and from 90 km / h (at least on the fastest route, therefore), it is possible to benefit from a direct route change. The car reads its surroundings and detects when the left lane is free. All you have to do is press the shift controller so that the car will change direction, as long as you hold the steering wheel with one hand. Of course, it works, but we have found that cruise control lacked little anticipation and therefore fluidity, with a tendency to get too close to the front car and therefore slow down, before starting the steering and accelerating. There is no doubt that minor adjustments can be the subject of an update.
Software 3.0 also improves route planner, with the best support of the stations along the way, as well as augmented reality with the information provided on the headline displays. It also has automatic parking function that can save up to 5 maneuvers. For example, you can save one for parking in your property, one for your workplace, for your in-laws, etc. Once set up, parking operations are fully automated, but you should stay on board until the end of their development. It fits in tight spaces, but a little slower. If you can park easily, you will want to do the trick yourself!
Software 3.0 also integrates communication Car2X (which makes it possible to exchange information with other vehicles in an anonymous way, for example on road conditions somewhere), but also to help drive support systems – for sure. Lane Assist which helps prevent slipping out of the track – better understand the road. This is evident in departmental roads where landmarks are sometimes reduced.
Finally, speech recognition should be improved, but in our opinion it continues to be an object of exceptional device, mainly because it tends to believe that it is called when it is only discussed by its passengers and without any real logic in the phonemes that introduced it. For basic models, the difference is even greater as the basic identifier.4 is available from 42,400 euros, versus 52,550 euros for ID.5, but for a completely different array format it is true, as it is currently only 77 kWh. The battery is supplied in a coupe SUV, while the “classic” SUV lets you choose a small battery with a capacity of 52 kWh.
