Kia Ceed: show up!

Designed locally and in Europe, where it is also manufactured, Ceed is for Kia as Golf is for Volkswagen, which is a basic and capital model. This salon, also found in station carriages, with SW style or “hunting” ProCeed silhouette, is certainly one of Kia’s best-sellers in the Old Continent. Thus, even if a compact unit no longer attracts drivers as it once did, it remains a hub on every manufacturer’s chess board. So it is no coincidence that four years after its launch, designers had a hand in changing it. Completely redesigned and, in particular, the new standard LED lights and adjustable grille, the front gives the impression of dealing with a real novel. It is not very interesting back or at least will depend on the chosen finish.

Indeed, new LED lights with sliding indicators (in the five-door section) are reserved for high-end versions such as our GT-Line Premium test model. But, Peugeot also reserves preferences for its more expensive 308 price proposals then…

Obviously a reset is required, Kia has not started the expensive dashboard switch. So we find the same world, higher in design, and full of bonds (which are not so bad in these times of everything / very tangible) as well as careful design even if all the material cannot be blamed. A real beauty on the Ceed board, it is not surprising to be found “on screen” with a new large 10.25 inch panel in the middle (8 in basic designs) and facing the driver, a digital phone (12.3 ”)… again stored. at the top of the column.

Kia Ceed: “new” engine.

If you are a loyal Car Magazine reader or a PhD student in Kia, you will say that the 1.5 T-GDI is not a new engine and you will be… correct! Indeed, the Korean compact was not waiting for its redesign to adopt this four-cylinder turbocharged engine that replaced the first 1.4 T-GDI last year. With more power (+ 20 hp) and slightly more torque (+ 13 Nm, or 253 Nm at 1,500 rpm) than its predecessor, with a variable distribution, this barrier is effective. Understand with this that aside from the slightest laziness of departure compels you to keep a soft dose of clutch in town, then you always have good intentions with the “dieselesque” operation. Filled like an egg from the bottom of the tachometer, it offers great flexibility and good performance. So there is no need to look for a higher destination, a steep climb which he does not like however by giving up his maximum power at 5,500 rpm and then taking a nap. But this is a big part of many modern gasoline units and is far from bad to use. If it could be paired with a dual-speed two-speed gearbox (requiring an additional € 1,500), we experimented with a good old six-speed manual box. Well-planned, giving short distances, we can only blame this distribution for an interesting order. But it is not enough to destroy a good quality mechanical panel, especially since during our experiment, the board computer did not show false values on the operating side, as well as, depending on the speed, between 6 and 8 l / 100km.

Kia Ceed: still fun to drive but….

For a long time, Korean manufacturers relied on most of all popular price / equipment ratios to attract customers. This era has passed for a few years and Kia (as well as its Hyundai counterpart) made powerful arguments such as their version of XXL in the green mechanics (electric, hybrid) that some European rivals do not match. Again. This rise to power was also accompanied by road services in open development, as Ceed points out..

Technically, there is already a saying because the compact has a rear axle of many joints, a (expensive) feature that, for example, the Peugeot 308 does not. The result is a smooth transition to the wheel and precise, agile and flexible. car, in short which gives confidence. In this regard, the direction, well-established and allowing to capture the boundaries of commitment, has a lot to do with it. So, if its rear axle was slightly closed, the Kia Ceed would be more fun to drive than it is, for example, the Ford Focus. But there is enough to convince a large number of drivers. However, this medal has a price. With his excellent power, Ceed makes them pay for comfort and rudeness, especially in a city with a dry elevator … a blame that can also be inflicted on a rival from Ford. In short, it is very unfortunate that Kia did not miss the opportunity to revise its copy a bit and go further towards the right harmony like the Peugeot 308 or Seat Leon. Maybe it will be for the next generation?

Kia Ceed: test results

If we can regret that Kia did not take the opportunity to make its Ceed better, this compact is far from the constant absence and benefits of a very good overall rating. Known below that of the three-cylinder 1.0 T-GDI (100 and 120 hp from € 21,990), the 160 hp 1.5 T-GDI engine will attract lovers of high-performance petrol engines without blowing the budget (from 25,590 € or equivalent finish, 1,000 € more than 1.0 T-GDI 120 hp) knowing that with CO2 emissions between 129 and 134 g, the penalty effect is here anecdotal (210 € maximum).
