Oscar Piastri will play for the first time in Formula 1

Australian Oscar Piastri will race in Formula 1 for McLaren in the 2023 and 2024 seasons, as his contract with the British team was deemed valid, contrary to Alpine’s claims and youth commitment. The announcement was made this Friday by the International Automobile Federation (FIA).

Piastri, 21, was in the middle of a legal mess. McLaren and Alpine claimed to have a contract with the driver for next season. F1’s Contract Recognition Board (CRB), which is arbitrating the case, ultimately ruled in favor of McLaren.

The soap opera began in early August, when Fernando Alonso announced his surprise signing with Aston Martin for the 2023 season. Alpine, the Spaniard’s current team, announced that the driver who would replace the Spaniard from next season would be reserve Piastri. However, the Australian denied this information:

“I have not signed any contracts with Alpine for 2023. I will not be a driver for Alpine next season”, said the young man on his social network.

The disparagement of the young driver, champion of Formula 3 in 2020, and Formula 2 in 2021, for the team to which he was revealed is because he got an agreement with McLaren, which ended up winning the legal battle. Oscar Piastri will replace fellow Australian Daniel Ricciardo, who will leave the team after failing to perform as expected and his future is still unclear.
