Niels Michotte: “The happiest day of my life” – News

As in a dream! This Sunday, Niels Michotte won the Paris-Roubaix Juniors, seven and a half months after a fatal crash on the Rüebliland Grand Prix, in Switzerland. At the time he had missed all of his biggest rallies at the end of the 2021 season but pledged to return to the top of the Paris-Roubaix which he finally lifted the most spectacular stones, during the festive stage, at the end of ‘a. unique unique number (see title) DirectVelo collected Luxembourger responses from the AG2R Citroën group in the center of the Roubais velodrome.

DirectVelo: You have completed the full race!
Niels Michotte: I first left with Jan Christen on a paved road. Matys Grisel had invaded alone. We did well with the team. The purpose was for me to put the cartridge in case I ran away. I never thought of playing my card like that, alone. But it is Paris-Roubaix, there are many unexpected events in these races. Once in Mons-en-Pévèle, I did not want to stress because there were so many newcomers to the peloton, especially Danes and Norwegians. I threw it away. Joshua Tarling and Artem Schmidt were still on the peloton, they are great players capable of pushing the group back.

Then you became a victim …
Yes, it blocked my left leg. I have a friend from Luxembourg, Mil Morang, who took me back to the first group. It still took me about twenty minutes to get home. I asked my team to step aside so that it would not clash. I took the time to clear my mind, calm down and refill myself. My colleagues were nice.

Then you got the physical and mental strength to attack again!
I wanted to avoid hooligans. I know I have good driving skills. Spending an hour at rest, I would. In these races, along with the stone race, we know that it can go a long way in being one step ahead. This time I ended up with the French and the Danish forward (Victor Dattin and Henrik Breiner Pedersen, Editor’s note). Dane had no reason to climb and had a great team behind him. I knew it wouldn’t work that way so I decided to put its column back for the stone-laying area. It is now or never. I quickly took fifteen meters, so I insisted. I felt good, I had good legs.

“A FEW YEARS AGO, I WAS PUBLIC”

How did you feel in the last twenty miles alone in leadership?
The situation at Carrefour de l’Arbre was indescribable! However, with each stroke of the foot, it burned. I thought back to Hugo Toumire’s 2nd place here a few years ago, it was an additional incentive (in 2019 behind Dutchman Hidde van Veenendaal, editorial note). Then at the velodrome, it was really intense emotionally! It is the best day of my life. I still do not believe. The 3rd place of my teammate Léandre Lozouet is a staple in the cake. A few years ago, I was in public, in this velodrome, shouting at runners to encourage them and this time it was I who emerged victorious. What I felt today (Sunday), I will never forget. In addition, my parents were present, especially on the radio. They brought me luck.

Now you will play the rest of the season in the shoes of the Paris-Roubaix winner tu That’s it!
Last year, I would probably have been very young and not mature enough to handle this kind of feeling. I broke my radius during GP Rüebliland at the end of the season. I missed the European and World Championships. But also Paris-Roubaix, correctly! Mentally, it hurt me. Ever since I got back on my bike, I have been interested in this Paris-Roubaix 2022.

How do you feel within the AG2R Citroën training?
It was really exciting to join this team! I sent applications like many others and it worked. I spoke to Alexandre Chenivesse and Alexandre Pacot. They liked my profile, there was a place for J2… I told them about my goals and they were completely behind me. It is crazy to be part of this team.
