This is how a pair of pre-production prototypes of the new 2022 Mercedes GLC appear in these spy images, in two colors, and from every aspect. However, as our renderings demonstrate, the manufacturer is unlikely to make significant changes to the design of such a popular vehicle, so think evolutionary rather than revolutionary.
It is obvious that the wheelbase has been lengthened. The engineers concede that the distance between the wheels has been increased by 15 millimeters, which may not seem like much, but it results in a somewhat more roomy interior.
The inside seems roomier overall than the previous GLC, particularly in the back, where headroom and legroom are increased. The thin shape of the top half of the front seats also contributes to the sense of openness. As would be anticipated given the name, the construction quality is outstanding, as are the materials and finish on our sample.
The trunk has increased somewhat in size from 550 liters in the previous generation to just under 600 liters with the seats up. This will be significantly less for the GLC Coupé, which is projected to remain in the model lineup and will be followed soon afterward by the standard GLC.
Unsurprisingly, the GLC significantly borrows from the C-Class and shares its drivetrain. However, as is customary, the engines provided vary by market. In the United States, only the turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder petrol engine is offered. Mercedes-Benz has provided just one specification for its four-cylinder turbocharged engine: the maximum output of 258 horsepower and 400 Nm of torque when AMG is not included. Additionally, 2.0-liter turbodiesels with varying degrees of performance are available for Europe and other worldwide markets.
Given Mercedes-Benz’s electrification, the new GLC series’s engines will all be mild hybrids. All engines include an integrated Mercedes second-generation starter-alternator that, when combined with the standard 48-volt onboard electrical system, produces 22 horsepower and 250 Nm.
Mercedes will offer three plug-in hybrid variants in addition to the regular ones. Two petrol engines and one diesel engine are partially powered electrically. These plug-in variants, which combine a 134 hp and 440 Nm electric motor with a 9-speed automatic gearbox and a battery pack, provide an all-electric range of “far over” 100 kilometers on the European cycle, according to Mercedes-Benz.
These plug-in variants allow the GLC to reach speeds of up to 238 kilometers per hour only on electric power and may be configured with a quick charging capability to take advantage of strong public charging stations.
Given that we drove the Mercedes-Benz EQE before stepping into the GLC prototypes (in the shape of the GLC 220d), we anticipated a lack of refinement in comparison to the whisper-quiet electric automobiles. That is not the case, as the GLC’s four-cylinder diesel engine began gently and idled quietly. This refinement is also visible when driving, as Mercedes excels at muffling under-bonnet noise.
The knowledge gained from developing ultra-quiet electric vehicles and the resulting necessity to eliminate additional sounds was applied to the development of vehicles with internal combustion engines. The GLC is the first Mercedes-Benz vehicle to include a two-millimeter thick bitumen layer in the transmission tunnel, which is so effective that engineers may dispense with additional, thicker insulation. Our test car had an air suspension and rear-wheel steering as options. This feature enables the rear wheels to swivel up to 4.5 degrees for increased high-speed stability and mobility at low speeds. Additionally, this technology has been seen in the EQE SUV.
Not only is the drive system quiet, but so is the road and the suspension, which gives good damping on hard, lumpy snow and ice. Naturally, in these circumstances, we drove on non-studded snow tires and in a 4Matic model. Both of these techniques resulted in outstanding traction.
This is also true of performance. The 220 d’s substantial torque, combined with the mild-hybrid system and the seamless nine-speed Mercedes-Benz automated transmission, guaranteed that the GLC felt snappy both while accelerating from a stop and when driving.
The technology under consideration
There are no data to back up these thoughts, but it’s difficult to believe that the new GLC 220 d will not at least match the 7.9-second sprint from 0 to 100 km/h time set for the preceding model, if not exceed it. In Comfort mode, the stability and traction control systems sustain propulsion seamlessly, while Sport mode boosts slip control and fine-tunes the chassis balance, resulting in a comfortable ride on the road.

Unsurprisingly, the GLC shares a big portion of its infotainment design with the new C-Class, including a massive 11.9-inch portrait display and a 12.3-inch display for the instruments in front of the driver. Additionally, there is a redesigned three-spoke steering wheel that incorporates touch controls.
The hardware is powered by Mercedes-newest Benz’s MBUX (Mercedes-Benz User Experience) system, which may be accessed through the steering wheel controls, the central touchscreen, or by voice command with the word “Hey Mercedes.”
The navigation system has an augmented reality feature that enables the virtual imprinting of house numbers on the screen picture from the outside. However, this is one of those things that seems beneficial in theory but is quite redundant in practice. More handy is the center screen display of traffic signals, which we have encountered on the road in the C-Class.

Naturally, the new GLC line incorporates enhanced safety features. Distronic’s active distance assistance (or cruise control) can now operate at speeds of up to 62 kilometers per hour, up from 37 kilometers per hour before. Additionally, features like Active Steering Assist, Traffic Sign Assist, and Intelligent Parking System have been enhanced and should be scrutinized more extensively once we have a chance to drive the production vehicle.
Also, optional Trailer Maneuvering Assist can now conduct 90-degree turning maneuvers, which previously was not feasible, making parking a trailer simpler than before.
The final, precise specifications will be revealed during Mercedes-formal Benz’s unveiling of the new GLC. However, our initial drive with the prototype demonstrated that the GLC will continue its place as a best-seller, with enhanced technology, driving aids, more efficiency, increased room, and a significant electric range with the plug-in hybrids all contributing to its appeal.
Along with the original five-door with a relatively sloping rear end, a sporty coupé version will return in 2023. In all situations, rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive variants are envisaged. In terms of design, the new GLC follows Mercedes design boss Gorden Wagener’s lead toward smooth, flowing surfaces devoid of beads and edges. In the interior, the tendency continues. The SUV is built on a modified MHA (Modular High Architecture) chassis that also supported the predecessor. The foundation is inextricably linked to the MRA2 platform (Modular Rear Architecture), which underpins the contemporary C-Class (W206).

The plug-in hybrids are the 300e 4-Matic (204 hp plus 136 hp) and the 400e 4-Matic (258 hp plus 136 hp). Also, the GLC 300 de is offered with 200 + 136 horsepower. Charged at 60 kW, the battery has a range of around 100 kilometers.
