Life is tough for the Volkswagen ID.3. Troubled by the shortage of semiconductors, the German manufacturer has decided to reduce the range of its zero-emission compact to the lowest level. The goal: reduce the number of configurations to facilitate production and ensure that the design is delivered within acceptable deadlines. In fact, since February, it was only available with its single engine of 204 hp (150 kW), a central battery of 58 kWh and a unique finish called Active with many accessories and shown at the correct price without adding: €44,990, excluding the bonus of €. 6,000. It was, let’s face it, because the range is expanding again. The Pro S Active design definitely improves the ID.3 sub-family. A direct competitor to the more advanced version of the Renault Mégane E-Tech 100% Electric, what does it have on paper to worry about its rival in Losange?

Power or freedom, the choice is yours

Despite its premium status, don’t expect more power from this ID.3 Pro S Active than the Pro Performance Active implementation. For power lovers, it will be necessary to wait for the ID.3 GTX which should be around 300 hp. However, the electric motor, placed at the back, gives a very good power of 204 hp. What to see is coming and it is enough to exercise from 0 to 100 km / h in less than 8 seconds. With 16 additional hp, the more expensive Mégane does better in this exercise: 7.4 s. But this is one of the only arguments of the French. Because, not very cheap (€ 750 less, none of them can claim the main bonus of € 6,000 and actually pay € 2,000), its small battery of only 60 kWh makes it immediately less attractive than the 77 kWh one from the German one. According to the manufacturer’s statistics, its autonomy in the combined cycle will be less than 100 km on average, or even less depending on the version and equipment you choose. And since the current power of fast charging is almost the same (the difference of 5 kW, for the benefit of ID.3), not at this point we can decide between them. Like, Volkswagen doesn’t have to be expensive.

A quick look at the equipment, however, shows that the advantage is French, but only slightly: 20 “rims against 19” for the ID.3, leather upholstery against a velvet-leatherette combination, massage function for the front seats. It is not necessary to tip the balance in his favor. After all, it’s a matter of taste: some will prefer the SUV aspect of the Mégane to the monovolume aspect, which is a little against the trend of VW but guarantees better space on board. I’m not sure that this new version will help ID.3 recover, sales that have decreased by 44% in Europe since the beginning of the year, and even more than half (-59.8%, 1 007 copies) in our region. To give an idea, a sedan like the Citroën C5 X or a large SUV like the Mercedes GLE sold more in the same period: 1,102 for the former, 1,098 for the latter.
