At their meeting in Wilhelmshaven, environment ministers spoke in support of the introduction of a speed limit on the highway. It will be where it is still unknown.

Federal Environment Minister Steffi Lemke (Greens) announced on Friday that he would reduce the use of biofuels from crops grown by changing laws. He wants to submit a proposal “immediately”.

Lemke said the Ukraine war shows the deterioration of food and raw materials supply. “Agrofuel from food and feed can no longer be a solution when we are threatened by one of the world’s worst famines.” Farms are needed around the world to produce food, Lemke said. “That is why we need to reduce the use of agricultural oil from food and feed crops.”

Plate instead of tank

The environment ministers of the federal states also spoke in support of this in a resolution. “We want a plate instead of tanks,” said the chairman of the Environment Ministerial Conference, Lower Saxony Environment Minister Olaf Lies (SPD). In Germany alone, 2.4 million tons of feed and food are used to make bioethanol as a fuel supplement. “I think it would be more prudent if we used land to grow food,” Lies said. To save resources, government ministers also voted for a speed limit on the road. “We also need to promote climate protection through speed limits,” said Lies. The resolution, which also contains information on climate protection and the effects of the war in Ukraine, was unanimously adopted by the votes of the two federal states, Lies said.

Criticism from VDB

The German Plant Oil Industry Association (VDB) rejected the decision. “If environmental ministers want to further reduce biofuels, they must also explain how they intend to achieve climate targets,” said CEO Elmar Baumann. German Environmental Aid, on the other hand, welcomed the development of the conference. The speed limit is correct, said Federal Director General Jürgen Resch. The effect of the aid is impressive.

To expedite the expansion of renewable energy, especially wind energy, government ministers called on the federal government to set legal standards for species protection inspections. This creates legal certainty and simplifies management processes, said Lies.

The Minister stressed that in addition to urgent procedures, sufficient funds and specialists are also required for this energy conversion. The joint task force of the central government and the state governments had come to the conclusion that an additional 3,500 jobs were needed in Germany to achieve the climate protection goals that had been set. In addition, 2.3 billion euros is needed more per year for nature conservation and climate change adaptation.

Do not neglect type protection

Federal Environment Minister Lemke stressed that biodiversity protection should not be neglected when expanding renewable energy and climate protection. Therefore, the federal government wants to provide an ecosystem support program for nature conservation in the amount of 82 million euros in the next few years. “This means that where the expansion of wind energy has a negative impact, we will reduce this impact through biodiversity relief programs,” said Lemke.

In Wilhelmshaven, the Federal and State Ministerial Environment Conference was held for the first time in two years as a result of the tragedy. The meeting was also accompanied by several rallies and demonstrations – several environmental protection groups had set up a weather camp in front of the conference hotel.

Work on the construction of a natural gas import station (LNG) began in the port city just last week. Environment ministers have agreed that this is necessary to reduce Russia’s energy dependence, said conference chairman Lies. However, such stations should only be “bridge”. (dpa)
