Mercedes-Benz with its “EQ” label dedicated to 100% electric vehicles is accelerating with the aim of providing a wide range of zero-emission vehicles. The star-studded company is even the first to sell the 7-seat electric SUV.
A year ago, we got behind the wheel of a small Mercedes-Benz EQA SUV (L: 4.463 m). With 4,684 meters, the new EQB is therefore the “big brother” of EQA, the two SUVs share everything, from their design, to their equipment, through their different engines. Let’s start our experiment with the Mercedes-Benz EQB electric SUV by presenting its model.
The silhouette of the Mercedes-Benz EQB is logically very close to the EQA. So we get, in front, a complete grille that is one with optics. This well-designed and smooth unit ignores the bumper with sports accents provided by the “AMG Line” finish. This provides a small dose of visual acuity that is intended for large families.
In the profile, the EQB body extends to the top to occupy two additional seats. The designers at Mercedes-Benz have made a wise decision to give the passengers of the last two seats a wide range of exterior. Beautifully speaking, slightly sloping glass surfaces, located on the back racks, avoid reducing the weight of the German electric SUV lines.
Issued as usual, in the “AMG Line”, with 18-inch rims, our experimental EQB is based on 19-inch 5-inch rims. These help to reduce the extremely high EQB style. Note that 20-inch rims can also be ordered. In terms of color, our EQB 350 4Matic experiment is “wearing” “Patagonia Red metallic Manufaktur” which is very interesting to look at.
Seen from behind, the EQB roof drop, of course, is very similar. It is clear not from this angle that the Mercedes-Benz EQB is the most attractive, but its intentions are elsewhere. For others, we find, similar to the EQA and other Mercedes-EQ, a large light cord that makes a link with two lights. This is an opportunity to remember that the EQC SUV, the first 100% electric car from a German manufacturer marked, in 2018, the launch of the EQ brand. Yes, these last two letters “EQ” (for Electricity Quotient), corresponding to the brand in its own right, will have to get used to writing Mercedes-EQ.
Before the test called the “road” of the Mercedes-Benz EQB, let’s open the doors of our big test SUV. We find, happily, an environment that is high quality and refined by brand from across the Rhine. The main part of this elegant and fully organized passenger cabin is represented by the MBUX system and its large panel consisting of two 10.25 ″ screens, one being provided to the driver as a digital instrument. Another central screen is sensitive to touch. Allows you to control all car parameters, infotainment and GPS included, etc. MBUX is always, and also, a very effective and friendly “Hey Mercedes” voice command with a feminine voice that can make you love each other more. than one father, beware!
As mentioned in the introduction to this Mercedes-Benz EQB test, the 350 4Matic model is sold mainly in the “AMG Line”. The result is an open sports environment and, in particular, the presence of driver / passenger sports seats, a steering wheel with many controls and controls. Added to this is an elegant “Artico imitation leather / Dinamica microfiber” upholstery with red stitches. Also note the contribution of the impressive brightness provided as a standard in our EQB 350 4Matic AMG Line test.
In terms of on-board equipment, the EQB lacks nothing, apart from it, as a “space shuttle”. In this area, Mercedes-Benz is the best. For example, keep in mind that the 100% EQS electric sedan, the smaller EQE and the brand new EQS SUV have incredible Hyperscreen technology. However, what impresses us most is the EQB’s survival capability even if we return to the electric intelligence of this 7-seat SUV, immediately behind the wheel.
The Mercedes-Benz EQB benefits from sliding (14 inches) and folding the back seat of the bench as required, while the last two seats, offered as usual in the French car market, are also folded. The result is a large living space for occupants of the second row of seats, even for raised floors, the fault of battery integration.
Two passengers who will be seated in the last two sections must not exceed approximately 1.65 m in height, at risk of touching the ceiling with their skulls. This leaves room for two children, or even two teenagers. For its loading volume, EQB displays, on its technical paper, the following values: from 465 to 1,620 l (in 7 locations). Please note that these data are related respectively to those with two folded back seats and all seated seats. As you will understand, there is very little cargo space left when the EQB is designed to take up to 7 people.
Unlike the EQB 250 4Matic (140 kW / 190 hp) with only electric motor that drives the front wheels, the EQB 350 4Matic has a second electric motor mounted on its rear axle, making it an electric SUV with a wheel drive, so name. “4Matic”. Near Nazaré, on the Portuguese highway along the Portuguese coast, the Mercedes-Benz EQB, weighing 2,175 kilograms, leaves with a special fist for electric vehicles, with a torque of 520 Nm. found immediately. As with EQA, we usually get car controls. In terms of comfort they felt, it is of the highest standard, for a number of reasons. It is not the outside noise or other noise coming from the furniture that is disturbing our lovely car ride. In addition, our EQB experiment has flexible controls (optional). Please note, this is not an Airmatic-controlled suspension but a € 1,200 option that allows you to upgrade the running gear in Sport mode, with 3 other driving modes as follows: “Individual” (personalized), “Comfort” “and” Eco “.
We did not use the previous words “driving” by chance. Indeed, the EQB is considered to be at a moderate pace in favor of “Comfort” conditions. At high speeds, even if it remains healthy and safe for the body to produce, the heavy Mercedes-EQ SUV is lightweight, its only calling being to transport parents and children. During the break, we appreciated the good sensitivity caused by the left pedal, despite the presence of a brake energy recovery system. In the more hostile area, the EBQ will also be more comfortable, in the mountains or elsewhere.
Let’s get back on the road because, at some of the damaged parts that we picked up on the wheel, the EQB surprised us so much with its ability to withstand certain vibrations. In the city, don’t be afraid, the EQB can be flexible enough with the camera and various driver screens available to let you go almost anywhere.
If there is one step in which Mercedes-EQ engineers are clear experts, it is about electrical energy management. The battery charge (critical capacity of 66.5 kWh) is therefore maintained by the electronic intelligence included in the EQB. By using navigation data, the SUV will be able to slow down itself as it approaches a marked stream or even a rotation. For this, it will be necessary to include the “D auto” mode of energy recovery, through the blade on the steering wheel, the other two “D -” (maximum rescue) and “D +” (light recovery) are also activated. plan. It should be noted that Mercedes has simplified the operation of methods that improve, or not, energy recovery. On the EQC, they were, moreover, very numerous with good understanding. In addition, you should know that navigation is calculated automatically based on the battery charge level. If not, the EQB will kindly escort you to a charging station located near or near you.
On digital instruments, we enjoy reading accurate indicators that show how to drive safely, safely, without having to go through a charging box. It’s fun, very educational and makes you want to drive through zen, not forgetting the performance of EQB 350 4Matic: 0 to 100 km / h: 6.2 s – top speed: 160 km / h.
Our drive option thus fell into the “combo” which combines the “Comfort” and “D Auto” types. So, we have, sorry to say, we have swallowed a mile for truly forgetting the fact of being on an electric SUV wheel with a weight that therefore exceeds 2 tons.
So we come to the freedom of the EQB 350 4Matic that has been released, in the WLTP cycle, between 395 and 423 km. In practice, in a mountainous course with many sharp turns, we noted the consumption of 23.4 kWh / 100 km, i.e. actual freedom of 298.20 km. With regard to EQB charging, it is possible with a maximum power of 11 kW in switching current (AC). It will then take, for example, to the Ionity terminal, just 30 minutes to go from a 10 to 80% charge with a maximum power of 100 kW.
To conclude our delightful test of the Mercedes-Benz EQB 350 4Matic, we must admit that we did not expect to enjoy the quiet driving behind the wheel. The German manufacturer, an expert in the field of running gear, therefore is doing well by selling the first 7-seat SUV in the electric car market. Once again, we should not question EQB and its “electrical stability power” but, with satanic effectiveness in terms of its comfort. Despite the disappointing freedom, compared to the competition (Tesla Model Y Grande Autonomie: 533 km), the EQB is, in any case, a unique thanks to its 7 seats. including ecological bonus).
