Mercedes-Benz has made extensive technological updates to ensure that its large Sprinter offers more driving comfort than ever before, on almost any type of terrain. The main feature of this update is the very powerful and efficient 2.0-liter OM654 diesel engine, already known from the Mercedes-Benz passenger car range.

The Mercedes-Benz Sprinter exits the lineup with both four-cylinder diesel and gasoline engines for the 2023 model year, resulting in a more fuel-efficient design. The new OM654 engine allows for smooth acceleration, high torque levels, reduced emissions and low levels of noise and vibration. More efficient than its predecessors, it will be offered in two power levels: 125kW (168hp) and 155kW (208hp).

Engineering to increase efficiency

The use of an aluminum block and steel pistons, as well as a step-by-step combustion process and cylinder coating called NANOSLIDE. it reduces the friction inside the engine. All of this is combined with a multi-channel exhaust gas recirculation and exhaust gas treatment near the engine, which helps reduce fuel consumption and emissions in the 2023 Sprinter. From its location, the exhaust gas device after of treatment also works by reducing heat loss, resulting in increased efficiency.

The new transmission increases comfort and energy efficiency

The Mercedes-Benz Vans division will also opt for the new 9G-TRONIC (9-speed) transmission, which will be standard across all variants. The 9G-TRONIC transmission offers customers increased ride comfort, reduced fuel consumption, lower noise levels, lower emissions, higher gear ratios and lower speeds, allowing acceleration. Compared to the old 7G-TRONIC transmission, the 9G-TRONIC offers a higher first gear ratio to allow for quicker starts, as well as more ratios and more space between them, which results in better overall performance.

Torque on demand with a new all-wheel drive system

Replacing the previous 4×4 system, the Sprinter’s new all-wheel drive system offers customers the benefit of increased power and endurance, as well as a smooth overall transition, enabling them to tackle any type of terrain with ease.

Thanks to the all-wheel drive, they benefit from automatic torque when needed, which can be distributed up to 50% to the axles, whereas the previous all-wheel drive system sent 35% of the torque to the front axle and 65% of the torque to the rear. axle in 4×4 mode. The new all-wheel drive system also maintains the capabilities offered by its predecessor in terms of ground clearance, angle of attack, departure angle and ramp angle – assuring customers who choose the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter the high levels of quality and capability expected.
