Daniel Ricciardo’s poor performance is starting to draw public attention from McLaren. Group chief executive Zak Brown sent a fitness check to the Australian driver after the Spanish doctor stepped in formula 1.
In last Sunday’s race, Ricciardo once again saw Lando Norris – who started behind his teammate and was sick, all weekend, with tonsillitis – crossing the finish line first: 8th x 12th. The Australian completed just one race in the points in 2022, in Melbourne.
“Lando (Norris) definitely has an advantage. Obviously we would like to see Daniel (Ricciardo) close to Lando in terms of performance, to have a good internal battle. But Daniel is still not satisfied with the car. We are trying everything. It was, again, disappointing weekend.”
“If you exclude Monza and a few other races, (Ricciardo) has not fulfilled his expectations and ours. I think all you can do is continue to work hard as a team, maintain internal communication and keep increasing momentum, hoping that what is not right now will be right as soon as possible.
In his second year at McLaren and with no ‘excuse’ to get used to the team and the car, Ricciardo saw Zak Brown deliver his harshest criticism to date. The McLaren CEO also took the opportunity to praise the experienced driver’s teammate.
“I think that also shows how good Lando is. When you look at the difference between Leclerc and Sainz, Verstappen and Pérez… I think Lando is one of the best drivers in the world right now and when you see that distance between his team-mates, it’s kind of a compliment to him.” Brown.
Ricciardo will look to recover this season and raise his own morale at McLaren in Monaco, where he already won F1, in 2018. The division will return next weekend, between the 27th and 29th of May, in the streets of Monte.carlo. O BIG PRIZES cover LIVE and continue REAL TIME.
