Mazda is launching a new SUV, the 2023 CX-50

Customers interested in purchasing a compact SUV will have more options starting in spring 2022 from Mazda. In addition to the CX-5, this compact SUV that has been updated in time but is still 2017 in its current form, the manufacturer is launching a new model that will be added to the current lineup. It’s about 2023 Mazda CX-50A new compact SUV that aims to appeal to buyers looking for a more adventurous approach.

No, it won’t replace the CX-5, it will complement it. The purpose of 2023 Mazda CX-50 is to attract more buyers who are looking for an adventurous car, without sacrificing driving pleasure, whereas the CX-5 is more focused on cities.

In terms of dimensions, the CX-50 is wider, smaller and above all lower than the current CX-5. Additionally, the CX-50 uses the same architecture as the Mazda3 and CX-30.

In terms of style, no one will be surprised. The line is unmistakably Mazda, with the luxurious side we know from the brand’s latest models. To indicate the adventurous side, the bonnet is longer, the wheel arches are pronounced, the tracks are wider and the rear line is profiled, not to mention the text placed everywhere. Note the horizontal indicators under the bumper, taken directly from the CX-30, and which mark the new visual signature of the manufacturer.

Modern interior

The interior has a similar approach to what the Mazda3 and CX-30 offer with a driver-oriented design. The air vents are placed in the middle of the driving position and the infotainment screen is placed above the dashboard, to surround the driver. A new “terra cotta” color is offered to emphasize the feeling of luxury on board, as well as a panoramic sunroof, a first for a Mazda SUV.

At the rear, the seating positions seem more inviting than those of the CX-5 and the rear doors continue to open to almost 90 degrees, for easy access to the roof. No indication of how much trunk has been revealed.

Popular engines

Not surprisingly, the CX-50 uses engines familiar to the manufacturer. Up front is a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder whose output is unconfirmed, but which produces 186 horsepower and 186 lb-ft of torque in other models. Buyers can choose the optional 2.5L turbocharged 4-cylinder, good for 250 horses on 93 octane fuel and 310 lb-ft of torque. All versions come with a six-speed automatic transmission and are equipped with all-wheel drive.

The CX-50 also introduces Mi-Drive (Mazda Intelligent Drive), a drive mode selector that aims to make the car as capable on-road as it is off-road. The four modes are: Sport, Normal, Off-Road and Tow. The selection of driving modes allows, like other systems of its kind, to adjust the transmission program, the adjustment of the steering wheel and the response of the all-wheel drive.
