Two years ago, Elon Musk announced a revolution in the production of lithium batteries, announcing the 4680 battery, but experts and ordinary people greeted the innovation with skepticism. Tesla and the original manufacturer of the cell 4680, the Japanese company Panasonic, planned to introduce a “dry” method of making cathodes to save the production of new cells 4680. Today, the cathode coating is produced by the wet method – the material is deleted. , used for electrodes and dried for a long time in electric ovens. This method is quite expensive. The dry method avoids expensive solvent drying and processing processes, which Musk has promised to reduce the cost of traction batteries by 50%.

The technology to produce cathodes in a “dry” way was acquired by Tesla during the acquisition of Maxwell Technologies. It was tested by Maxwell for the production of supercapacitors, but it was not suitable for the production of large lithium batteries. Musk previously promised to mass produce 4680 cells in the United States by the end of 2022. Today, experts agree that the end of 2023 seems to be too optimistic for those promises.

Today, the Tesla Model Y electric car battery is valued at around 16% of the car’s cost. That’s about $10,000 on average. Deducting the cost of making the 4680 cell and the battery based on it promises to save you about $5,000.

The company has already realized savings of $1,000 to $2,000 just by using the new large cell design (4680). And the transition to “dry” cathodes will save $ 2,000 to another $ 3,000. That will not happen today and it is not possible next year, but soon the new technology will be introduced into production and will lead to the lower price of the company’s electric cars up to $ 25,000, as Elon Musk promised.
