Lamborghini will compete in the FIA World Endurance Championship, WEC, from 2024, with its first LMDh model – in the supercar category, also eligible for IMSA contention in the GTP class. The company’s decision is in line with the brand’s intention to make the transition to hybrid technology in the automotive industry by the end of 2024, with all its hybrids.
“This step towards the highest level of motor racing is an important step for our company,” said CEO Stephan Winkelmann. “We will be testing ourselves against the best, in the most demanding foundations. On the one hand, this will give more visibility to our successful motorsport program, but it will also allow us to test future technologies: our LMDh prototypes will be our most advanced laboratory of four wheels.
The legendary car brand also has the reputation of being a traditional motorcycle competitor. Lamborghini has participated in touring car racing at the highest level since 2015, with more than 40 titles and several records, such as three consecutive wins at the 24 Hours of Daytona in the GTD class, achieved between 2018 and 2020 – the first time The manufacturer won three in a row.
“I am very pleased that Lamborghini is taking the next step in our racing journey, a step towards LMDh and the next level of motor racing,” said motorsport brand head Giorgio Sanna. “LMDh will play a special role in Lamborghini’s motorsport strategy, giving us a unique opportunity to expand our racing activities to new platforms and strengthen our long-term partnerships with partner teams and drivers.”
In the WEC, Lamborghini will take the fifth car in the main class dispute, which already has four others: two from Toyota, one from Alpine – which includes the Brazilian André Negrão – and another from Glickenhaus, which has Pipo Derani.
“We are delighted that Lamborghini will join the WEC hypercar class from 2024 onwards”, celebrated the division’s CEO, Frédéric Lequien. “Lamborghini is a famous brand, but it has never competed in the first class of endurance racing before. They will join the WEC at a very exciting time in its history. For the 2024 season, there will be a unique line-up of brands competing in our premier class. The competition will be fierce, but we have no doubt that Lamborghini will be at the center of the fight.”
