Kia is offering the new Sportage hybrid in Brazil

The SUV will be sold in two versions from R $ 220,000, but production problems prevent sales estimates

Kia officially presented the new Sportage in Brazil. The fifth generation of the model is already on sale in two trim versions, starting at R$219,990.

The SUV is a small hybrid, combining a 180 hp and 27 kgfm 1.6 turbo engine with a 48 volt electrical system. This brings a generator instead of an alternator and a starter motor. The transmission is a two-speed dual-clutch automatic.

Made in Slovakia, the Sportage sold in Brazil is the same one sold in Europe. At 4.51 meters long, it is smaller than the 4.60 m of the Korean model.

Design is one of the tricks of the SUV. The front has boldly shaped headlamps and a wide honeycomb-style grille. At the rear, the Sportage has a more restrained but still futuristic style.

The cabin has a good quality finish and two screens – one for the instrument panel and the other dedicated to the multimedia center.

Good content and price adjustments

Before reaching retailers, the model already had its first price adjustment. Offered in two versions, EX (R$224,990) and EX Prestige (R$259,990), 250 cars were pre-ordered in a network of 78 dealers at a price of less than 2%, but the brand could not maintain the price:

“The dollar rose by 8% since the payment of the first cars and we made a price adjustment of less than 2%,” says José Luiz Gandini, president of Kia Brasil.

The Sportage will be sold in EX and EX Prestige trims. On the outside, the EX configuration (which costs R$ 219,990) is distinguished by 18-inch wheels and some exterior details in matte black.

Inside, the panel is digital with a 12.3-inch screen, but the multimedia center has an eight-inch screen with a smartphone mirror. The air conditioner is digital with two temperature control zones.

The list of standard features still includes an invisible sensor, lane keeping assistant and lane correction, forward collision alert and cross traffic alert.

The EX Prestige version costs R$254,990 and adds automatic, a camera with side-view images when changing lanes, an emergency braking system at intersections, 19-inch wheels, a gloss black front grille and LED fog lights. The cabin has a 12.3-inch media center, rotary gear selector and paddle shifters behind the steering wheel.

Production issues with future releases

The president of Kia Brasil, revealed that he still does not know how many Sportage units will be able to order here.

“We buy an average of 400 cars per month, and initially we got 500 for distribution. But I don’t know how many units I will receive in the coming months because of the lack of factors that affect global production. For example, so far the forecast is that every month we receive 250 cars . So, unfortunately, we will have to be satisfied with this volume until this problem is solved”, he admitted.

Gustavo Gandini, director of operations at Kia Brasil, said that the dealer network will have 35 dealers suitable for the international standard of visual identity by the end of the year.

All this to prepare the environment for the next releases. Still in 2022, the hybrid Niro arrives, while in 2023, plans include the first versions of the hybrid Sorento and the new generation Cerato.
