José Camacho addresses his 36th appearance at the Madeira Wine Rally: “There is no comparison”

José Camacho starts for what will be his 36th Madeira Wine Rally to try “what he knows best”. “It’s a race where we have to do good management because it’s very long”, predicts the experienced Madeiran pilot, who admits that he “loved being in the middle of the competitors with the R5”.

Camacho, 59, has driven cars as diverse as the first 1995 Ford Escort RS 2000, the 1.6 and 1.9 versions of the Peugeot 205 GTi, Peugeot 309 GTi, Ford Sierra Cosworth 4×4, Opel Astra GSi, VW Ibiza-Golf GTit Car, Peugeot 206 S1600 , the Fiat Grande Punto S2000 and the current Peugeot 208 T16.

His best result came in 2004 when he finished fourth in a Peugeot 306 Maxi. Regional champion in 1990, he did not attend the match organized by Club Sports da Madeira in 2010 and 2011.

The driver considers that “there is no possible comparison” between his first meeting and what will be on the road next week. “Today, everything is easier. Cars have changed a lot in almost 40 years, they bend faster, and that can be seen over time.

As an event, it should also be noted that Rui Pinto will have his 30th appearance at the event and that Bruno Magalhães is ready to participate for the 20th time in the competition that he considers one of his favorites.
