how a city-style resident became a top athlete

Autobianchi A 112 was released from 1969 to 1986 in more than 1.4 million units. Born to face the Mini, built in Italy by Innocenti.

The Fiat group decided to tackle the problem by handing over the Autobianchi, recently connected to Fiat, with the development of a small city car.

At an altitude of 3.26 m, A 112 will fulfill its famous small car contract. But this here… Mini will deliver 1275 GT and Cooper. The answer will not be long.

Carlo Abarth arrives

In the Fiat group, game preparations were made on the basis of the Fiat 600 (Abarth 850 TC) technically.

In the late sixties, the magician – that is Carlo’s artistic name – joined the Fiat group; A 112 goes through its workshop to reach more customers.

In 1969, Carlo Abarth released the first edition of A 112 which pushed for 105 horsepower. Very little for Fiat staff, which rejects the project and the handling is very strict.

A 112 Abarth first

In 1971, the first edition came out of the witch’s workshops, marked by a scorpion; it has only 58 horses but it already hurts a lot.

In the Abarth workshops, engineers started from the 903 cm3 Fiat base restored to 985 cm3 to increase compression ratio, change the crankshaft and install Weber’s twin carburetor.

In these pre-GTI years, the city sports car still did not have its honor letters; The Golf or Renault 5 will be released in 1975 and 1976. Success does not exist because a small animal is expensive.

It started in 1973

Between 1971 and early 1973, 4,600 Abarths were sold. In March 1973, series 2 collapsed; the appearance of plastic makes the car cheaper to repair and improve the appearance of the car.

A successful spiral resulted in over 13,500 sales up to 1975. In 1976, a new turning point came with the arrival of a large engine of 1050 cm3 and its 70 hp. He will stay for a few months with a small 58 horsepower that will soon disappear.

This looks a little off compared to the 110 hp of the Golf GTI released at the end of 75. But the Abarth is 150 kg lighter. From version 3 to 7, the engine will not change.

End of work in 1985

From the 4th column, only a beauty fix will prove the life of A 112 Abarth. The main adjustments will be the adoption of a 5-speed gearbox and version 4.

Innocenti will try to counter Abarth’s clutches by releasing Innocenti turbo De Tomaso but customers will follow Abarth.

The 112 will know the meeting and many inexperienced drivers will be exposed to the wheel, especially François Delecour and Attilio Bettega. The life of the car will make its mark. In 1985, it completed its commercial operation after selling 140,879 copies.
