When you look at American traditional films such as Top Gun, you will immediately discover what American legends are about: hot dogs. Hot Rods, Drive Ins and Route 66, endless highways, a bit of basketball and a simple casual life that have created California specifically. And half the world was longing for it. So when Chrysler was looking for a new role in an international organization after merging with Daimler Benz to form the DaimlerChrysler in the late 1990s, people remembered the original values. You could never pull teens and seniors from Mercedes anyway, so you wanted to keep the space quiet and bring some kind to market that never existed like this. Plymouth Prowler, for example, a real hot rod, at least visually. And then the PT Cruiser.

This also swam to a retro wave, which was gaining momentum at the time. VW along with New Beetle showed that you can succeed with the old and new shape – especially cheap – technology. After all, it was a way of appealing to the masses. In addition, they had an insignificant neon as technology sponsors in the program however, small cars were also very popular at the time – why not do good deeds for a reason? The first version of the PT Cruiser was released in 1999, and PT only stood for Private Transport – so the company’s customers were not targeted.

In any case, it was obvious from what examples one or another optical device was copied. The 1930s, linked with a bit of Art Deco, already had a historical dimension – yes, of what? Compared to the Beetle or later Fiat 500, PT did not have a real model from the beginning that you would like to buy as a teenager but have no money. Or that you drove when you were a student and now you want to revive your youth. All that was taken by the New Beetle, or a little later with the rebirth of the Golf GTI. But 60 years later, models from the 1930s would have been just something for people who did not think about buying a new one at the beginning of the millennium.

In addition, the second role, of the small car, was not a PT Cruiser thing either. In addition, due to the optics, the windshield had to be very low, the back is very flat and the interior is generally very small, which is why even a pratmatiker would not consider hitting here. On the engine side, there was no real treatment either, Neon released only four cylinders. But not all evening yet.

So it had to be revised soon, although possible volumes were probably badly judged. For example, the diesel PT (never called TD Cruiser) was manufactured by Magna in Graz for just one year before the Eurostar pledge expiration date was discovered however that this operation was very expensive. Although Europeans preferred to buy diesel at the time, they bought only a few PT Cruisers, which is why this variant, like all others, was also manufactured in Mexico.

So a new experiment was performed. The sports version was launched with a 2.4-liter turbo from the Neon SRT (never called the GT Cruiser), which, with its unmistakable steering wheel and weak chest seats with plus / minus 0.0 side support, could do nothing. a completely usable combination. The steering of the front wheel, which was completely overloaded, resulted in a driving behavior of incredible quality: the turbo PT has never been driven straight ahead due to high torque, except in curves.

So they went back to work and let go of the switch (which was never called the GT Cruiser either), turning the car from four doors to two doors. Great effort of construction, production and animation, where the results provided more space for the bathrooms, as because of the very high corridor it did not detect any fresh air and when parked in the back you would want to close the top – then you would not see at all.

The fact that PT Cruiser has been able to stay on the market for ten years shows how you can produce cheaply in Mexico. And how many American Heimat films are viewed. At least in the United States.
