GTI older sister

GTI older sister

Sedans and horses. This is how we can summarize the request for a certain number of French drivers in the 80’s. Problem, the only sedans with sports performance are German or Italian, but not French.

However, in the second half of the 1980’s, French producers seemed determined to fight, each in his own way. Thus, Renault remains faithful to its sacred Turbo to give wings to its quiet Renault 21, converted into a R21 Turbo. Citroen, in turn, relies on sixteen valves to make the BX the most powerful car, and the BX GTI16S. And for Peugeot?

Sedan thin and compact

In September 1987, Peugeot launched its sports sedan: 405 MI16. MI for Injection Engine, quite easily. We also see the desire to differentiate ourselves from GTI versions, especially those known for smaller cars such as the 205, by moving the market higher.

Designed in collaboration with Pininfarina and the Peugeot brand design office, led by Gérard Welter, 405 has extensively explored aerodynamics with a cx of only 0.30. But the 405 MI16 is more than a simple 405. Wanting to be sporty and chic, you’ll have to put the cursor where it should be.

Sporty and chic

In the full mania of the GTI, Peugeot will take a different view of everyone by providing a car that is more luxurious than an oversized one.

On the outside, the MI16 version is clearly visible with its more front-facing bumper, its special sill and its sensible rear damage. The sports rims are only 14 inches and they strive to fill the gaps.

Inside, a sports leather steering wheel and pressure gauge with red needles advertise the color while bucket seats covered with a watch board invite you to take action.

The cylinder head of 16 valves comes out of the competition.

Engine from Dakar

In order for the damage to be related to the fur, Peugeot wants to blow up the engine of his new sports car.

The 405 MI16 inherits a multi-valve engine whose cylinder head comes directly from that of the 405 Turbo 16 competing in Dakar. The two-liter barrier and its Bosch Motronic injection system develop horsepower of 160 and 84 hp / liter. The gearbox is the 205 and 309 GTI with a new platform.

In terms of chassis, no worries, this Peugeot inherits the best and justifies the brand reputation in terms of road maintenance.

The MI16 can rely on its cousin Turbo 16 to ensure it is promoted.

Little sister of Turbo 16

The success of the MI16 version is immediate and unacceptable. But while Jacky Ickx and Ari Vatanen are jumping head and shoulders over the Paris-Dakar rally in their 405 Turbo 16, there is nothing in line with the wheel drive. To mark this relationship and promote this success, Peugeot launched a new version in the spring of 1989.

The new MI16 has a permanent four-wheel drive, a viscous connector responsible for transmitting power to the axle most closely connected to the Torsen variant in the rear.

Another specialty, it receives a hydraulic rear suspension with automatic and permanent balancing adjustment, with rims going up to 15 inches. This version directs the point home, but the key is elsewhere.

Peugeot performs better, 405 is a huge success, the car wins in competition and this MI16 becomes a sacred grail for the whole generation.
